Here's a question for all the beauty addicts out there: How many mascaras do you usually have open at any given time? For me it's usually at least three because different formulas are ... different. Sometimes you want a natural look, sometimes you want waterproof, sometimes you want volume galore, y'know? I was really excited to give Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara a try because it promised an epic amount of volume—something I think is missing from my current mascara rotation. Let's see if it lives up to the hype, shall we?

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara box

Product description:
"Take home our Better Than Sex mascara and all your desires for lush, incredibly intense lashes will be fulfilled. One application of our collagen-fueled formula and touch of our specially shaped brush will leave you begging for more. One coat and lashes are full, defined and stretched to unbelievable lengths. Two coats and they’re reaching unbelievable heights of drama. Three coats and you’ll believe in magic."

I was particularly amused by how this mascara promises 1,944% more volume on the box—I feel like that would put my eyelashes clear across the room in actuality, but let's not nitpick. According the product page this mascara is vegan-friendly, though it's not listed under the vegan-friendly section in their FAQ, so I'm not 100% sure if it is or if it isn't. In any case Too Faced doesn't animal-test, and you can check out the whole ingredients list on the product page if you have any concerns.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara

"Better Than Sex" comes housed a gorgeous, sturdy pink tube. Not the most important aspect of this mascara, but I do appreciate good packaging when I see it.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara brush

I like the shape of the brush—I feel the density of the bristles makes it good for getting between every little lash. Getting every little lash = volume, in my experience. Let's see it in action:

I think it does a reasonably good job of volumizing and defining lashes, and I liked how intensely black it was. I did have a bit of trouble with it after extended wear though—for the first couple hours it did fine, but by the end of the day I found myself with a bunch of little mascara flakies under my eyes. Not obscene levels of flakes, but enough to keep me from throwing this in the "favorite mascaras" pile. Oh well!

Since we're talking flakies, his seems like as good a time as any to share a little mascara-related tip with you: Got a mascara that you like but crumbles or flakes by the end of the day? Put a clear mascara topcoat on it! I use e.l.f. Lash & Brow Clear Mascara (which at ~$1 per tube is about as cheap as you can get), and it makes a HUGE difference for me. Give it a try if you also have a mascara that's nice other than the flaking—I know I'll be using it with this one!

Where to buy:
You can find Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara on the Too Faced website, at Sephora, and a variety of other retailers. There's a store finder on the Too Faced website, FYI.

  1. I love this mascara and you're right, it's super black!

You only have 3 open mascaras at a time?? Try at least 10! And I mean sample and full size. Then again I don't throw mine away after just a few months and since I rotate them they don't usually dry up b/c they only rarely get opened for use.

  2. LOL! I said at LEAST three. :P But I try not to have too many open at once because I'm pretty good about replacing them every 2-3 months. I'm more worried about bacteria than them drying up because I've had a couple of gross eye infections ... not fun!

  3. I love the look of this mascara, but I'm disappointed to hear about flakies - they're the worst! I'd love to try switching to more cruelty-free brands, Too Faced seems like a great place to start!

  4. I love Too Faced! I've never used this mascara, but I'm currently using Lashgasm and it's equally wonderful. This one is next on my list!

  5. I think this is a good mascara but not my favorite. I sometimes get flakes with some mascaras but nothing too serious.

  6. Currently, I have 2 full size mascaras, 1 sample, and 1 fiber lash system sent for review open. You are so right; they all do different things! I have wanted this mascara, but I think I'll see if I can get a sample instead of trying to buy it. I like the clear mascara tip!

  7. Yeah Too Faced is great as a cruelty-free brand in general! This mascara was sort of a miss for me, but they have lots of other stuff that's better.

  9. Maybe I just have flaky eyelashes, lol. I don't really have that problem with every mascara though, just some.

  10. I feel like you can sometimes find this mascara in gift sets, especially around the holidays! Might be worth picking up that way since you'd get other stuff to try too.

  11. I should crack open the sample I have of this. I'll be on the lookout for flakies. Wouldn't it be fun if it really did make your eyelashes reach across the room?

  12. Yes! I'd use them to creepily tickle people in my path!

  13. Ah, that's too bad about the flakies! I'm so hesitant to try out new mascaras since my lashes are so stubbornly straight and thin. I tend to just stick with what works...

  14. What's your favorite mascara now? I feel like I don't have a HG mascara ... there are some I could point to and be like "would buy again!" which I guess is good enough?

  15. This sounds lovely, it's a shame about the flakes! I'm using Urban Decay's Perversion mascara at the moment and I really like it :) xx

  16. I wanted to try that, but it was sold out and now Tarazz isn't partnered with Sephora. Weep. Still, we're supposed to be getting a Sephora in Sydney soon. First one in Aus. Wooo.

  17. I haven't tried that one, sounds good though! :)

  18. Ooooh, that's exciting! I'm assuming a Sephora in Sydney would = mail order opportunities that don't have obscene shipping charges?

    ReplyDelete
  19. It's not even that. They literally won't ship to Australian addresses, even for obscene amounts. I hear they're even cracking down on people using forwarding services! Tarazz was partnered with them for a bit but not any more. So, yeah, hopefully it'll sort that out, unless the prices are crazily jacked up. Haha.

  20. Oh really? I didn't know they were so strict about forwarding services, that sucks!

  21. I love the perversion sample I have - this and teh perversion are really my faves right now.. I have no flaking with the TF BTS..
