Target Beauty Box Fall 2014 - Review & Unboxing

Affiliate Links Bought It

Hands up if you love all the drugstore beauty boxes that have been popping up lately! Last month we had the fall 2014 Walmart Beauty Box, and now the latest edition of the Target Beauty Box ... are you paying attention, other retailers? I'd love to see a Walgreens Beauty Box or something along those lines too. Just saying. But in the meantime, let's focus on what was in the fall Target Beauty Box, shall we?

Target Beauty Box Fall 2014 - Review & Unboxing Autumn October

Quick PSA before I get started: This box still seems to be available for purchase at the time of publishing this post, so grab it ASAP if you like what you see!

First things first, a little background: The Target Beauty Box is a non-subscription, non-mystery beauty box that is released intermittently. I think the last one was the March 2014 box. Past versions of the box have been free (for a bag containing only foil samples), or five bucks a pop for a box containing larger samples. The current incarnation of the box contains both deluxe samples and full-sized products and costs $7. Is it still worth it even with the minor price increase? Let's look inside and see!

Laneige BB Cushion Sampler (3x 2g samples, approximate value $14.28):

For those who don't know, Laneige is a popular Korean brand that launched at Target stores in the US earlier this year. Their BB cushion contains foundation with a high SPF, and is available in three shades: Light, Medium, and Dark. I actually reviewed and swatched all three shades around the time these started popping up in Target stores—you can see all the photos/details here. The short version is that I think this cushion has an awesome applicator and lovely, light formula, but none of the shades are really a match for me. Thankfully this sampler comes mini pods containing a little bit of each shade, so folks who are new to Laneige can figure out which (if any) of the shades match them:

Oh, and a mini applicator puff too! That's the secret ingredient for the flawless finish that most BB cushions provide.

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk L'Oreal® Paris Colour Riche Extraordinaire Lipstick 601 nude ballet

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk (Full size, 5g, value $4.49):
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils are available in a variety of shades, but I think everybody who bought the Target Beauty Box got "Milk", which is a pure white color. Not sure what to do with a jumbo white eye pencil? NYX Milk is actually sort of a cult favorite as an eyeshadow base—use it under bright colors to make them really "pop". If you want to see it in action, check out this review/swatch post I did a while back which compares a few eyeshadows over several different bases.

L'Oreal® Paris Colour Riche Extraordinaire Lipstick (Full size, value $8.99):
I think customers received one of several shades of this lipstick at random. Personally I got 601 - Nude Ballet, which is a creamy nude color (no shocker there). This is actually a liquid lipstick, more akin to a thick lip tint or gloss, and comes with a doefoot-type applicator. The formula is thick but not especially sticky and it has a pleasant fruity scent—not bad! I think I would have preferred a more vivid color, but I guess we can't win them all, eh?

Fekkai Salon Professional Blow Out Hair Refresher Dry Shampoo L'Oreal® Paris Elnett Extra Strong Hold Volume Hairspray

Fekkai Salon Professional Blow Out Hair Refresher Dry Shampoo (1.7oz can, value $7.99):

An aerosol dry shampoo with a refreshing, fruity scent. I've only used this once so far but my first impressions are good—it seems to refresh my hair without making it feel limp or gross, and I like the scent well enough. Certainly better than the dry shampoo that came with the last Target Beauty Box.

L'Oreal® Paris Elnett Extra Strong Hold Volume Hairspray (Sample size, 2.2oz, value $2.60):
A hairspray that promises strong hold and a soft, shiny finish. I don't have especially strong feelings about this sample because hairspray isn't a daily use product for me, but I'll give it a shot the next time I decide to try something special with my hair!

In addition to the various products/samples, there was also a coupon attached the info card: $3 off a Target Beauty purchase of $15 or more. Obviously you need the physical coupon to shop in stores, but if you're shopping online you can use code FALLBEAUTY and get the same discount. Code expires on November 29th, 2014.

Total box value: Approximately $38.35

Overall impressions:
I think this box is more than worth $7! The lipstick alone is worth more than the cost of the box, and I will certainly use up the dry shampoo, not to mention the backup NYX Milk pencil. And for folks who haven't tried the Laneige cushion yet, the sampler is very handy indeed. While I liked the selection in this box, I do hope that Target doesn't increase the price again next time, because at a certain point it becomes less of a steal, y'know?

  1. Looks like a pretty good box! I miss those free ones they used to do, though. I think I got 2 or 3 of them.

  3. I own that lipstick (in a different color ha) and I really love it. I'm interested in that dry shampoo. Let us know how it holds up after a few more tries!

  5. I tried that BB Cushion and it made my face feel greasy. I guess its not for everyone. It would probably be better for people with dry skin. I use Milk to rim my waterline. I have never tried any of those L'Oreal liquid lipsticks before. This is def worth the $7.00.

  6. Will do! Yeah, I like the texture of the lipstick. Would buy in another color if I saw it on sale!

  7. Definitely! I already have a NYX Milk pencil, but's getting worn down so great to have a backup ...

  8. The BB cushion definitely has a "dewy" finish so I think it would be better for drier skin too. I have seen a couple reviews from oily-skinned people who liked it though, so who knows? Anyway, I like the lipstick a lot! Worth a try if you see them on sale.

  9. I love this box! I would get it just to sample the bb cushion, but I really like everything else they included. This is a great value!

  10. Yes it's pretty darn good! Someone told me they were able to get one of the Laneige samplers at their local Target store, though I suspect availability will vary widely from store to store.

  12. That would make me want to try the box. I wouldn't pay that for just one sample. lol

  13. Saw your post on twitter. :) If i didn't, I would have missed out and forgot about ordering this. Been wondering if the Laneige bb cushion is worth it and I am so happy to see it part of this season's Target box. Great unboxing!
