I've been blogging in this space for nearly a year and a half now, and it occurred to me the other day that I've never done a proper "What's in my bag?" post. Not that this is a mandatory meme for bloggers or anything, but it's fun! I recently had the chance to pick up a new purse thanks to the friendly folks at Kipling USA, so I thought this would be as good a time as any to share the "What's In My Bag: Running Errands" edition. I'll also be sharing info about the upcoming Kipling Holiday Tour at the end of the post!
Now, the contents of one's bag will obviously vary a bit depending on what the bag is used for—today I'll be focusing on what I'm keeping inside my everyday "I'm running errands and don't want something that will weigh me down" bag.
I'm using the Kipling Star Small Bag for this—it's cute and compact, which is ideal for those times when you're lugging a bunch of shopping bags or other such nonsense. Oh, and it has a crossbody strap! A must for when you're loaded up with stuff!
In no particular order, here's what I have shoved in there:
- Tissues: A must for allergy sufferers like me, and useful as emergency toilet paper. Let's just say that public restrooms around NYC can be... er... understocked.
- Hand cream: I try to wash my hands pretty often, but it drives me insane when they get dry. Luckily I have an abundance of mini hand creams thanks to beauty boxes!
- Nail file: Likewise, having a a nail break while you're on the go is very irritating. With a mini file you can at least smooth it out until you get home and can fix it properly.
- Lip balm: Who enjoys having chapped lips? Nobody, that's who.
Electronics galore. The thing in the blue case is my smartphone (a Blackberry Z10, in case anyone's curious). This acts as my all-in-one entertainment device/e-mail checker/camera/magic box. Next to it is a rechargeable battery pod (very useful if you end up staying out longer than expected!) and a ridiculously old flip phone. I have a second phone for business purposes—unfortunately the somewhat more modern second phone I was using died, so I put the sim card in this ancient one I still had lying around for some reason. It's so old that it has the Cingular logo on it, in case you're wondering. :P But it works!
Pouch-o-stuff. Pouches are crucial for keeping all your little bits of makeup and tiny stuff together—in here I've got an eyeliner, mirror, lipstick, Advil, sunscreen, pads, breath spray, and bandages. Ready for almost anything? Garlicky pasta, at the very least.
It would be a bit silly to leave the house without keys, now wouldn't it? Of course I only have four keys on my ring, but about a thousand keychains and shopper's club cards. Amongst my key baubles is the Kipling Defea Key Fob, which functions as a zippered coin purse. I absolutely HATE having to hunt for loose change around the bottom of my purse—usually I get stabbed by a pen or something as I'm groping around. This coin purse is particularly adorable because it has a little pocket on the front:
Not sure what the intended function is because it's so tiny, but it sure is cute.
Poll time: Do you use your phone/tablet to make lists or are you still a pen-and-paper kind of person? I'm definitely the latter, so it's essential for me to have a pen and notepad with me at all times. The little piggie is an LED flashlight—ever try looking for something in your purse in the dark? Tiny flashlights make that a heck of a lot easier.
Last but not least, my wallet and MetroCard (which is what NYC subway/bus riders use to pay the fare). The MetroCard is separate because I keep it in the front pocket for easy access—you don't want to be that person endlessly fumbling through their bag near the entrance of the subway. As for the wallet, I tend to prefer to large kind so I can shove receipts and whatnot in there without them getting crumpled. Sometimes I even use a wallet meant for holding travel documents, though the one I have at the moment is pretty beat-up. I have my eye on this Kipling document holder as a replacement, mainly because I like the "Midnight Flock" print:
Speaking of Kipling, did y'all notice a monkey hanging off my bag earlier? If not, here's a close-up:
Many of Kipling's bags come with monkeys attached, which is frankly rather awesome. I was browsing around their site and learned that all of the monkeys have names, apparently—I took a closer look at mine and the tag says Darling. I don't know though... I've been looking at this monkey for a while and he seems more like a Florian to me. What do you think, should I keep my monkey's given name or re-name it Florian? Tough decisions. While you mull that over, here's an adorable video I found on the Kipling website of the monkeys doing stuff:
Monkeys: They're the new dinosaurs.
And now for something even cooler than Monkeys: Kipling will be kicking off their holiday tour in NYC this week with three nights of special events at their SoHo store! These events will feature musical performances, Kipling giveaways, refreshments and more. For more info and to RSVP, visit the #KiplingHoliday Tour page.
Not in NYC? They also have a few event dates scheduled in Los Angeles and Orlando for December, so be sure to check out their website if you live in those areas! Also, if you love Kipling too and are planning a haul, be sure to use this exclusive coupon code for $30 off your $150+ online purchase: HOLIDAYS30
Do you keep any of the stuff I do in your everyday handbag? What would you name your monkey?
