'Tis the season for beauty boxes! Oh wait, that's every season. But that doesn't mean I wasn't excited when my December Beauty Box 5 showed up in my mailbox a couple of days ago!

Beauty Box 5 December 2014: Merry & Bright review unboxing

Not familiar with Beauty Box Five? It's a monthly subscription service for beauty and personal care samples. Each month you'll get 4-5 beauty products from a wide variety of categories—think makeup, haircare, skincare, nails, tools and more.  BB5 costs $12 per month if you subscribe on a month-to-month basis, but they offer reduced pricing on multi-month plans. An annual subscription is $99 for example, which works out to a mere $8.25 per month. Prices include shipping to the USA lower 48, and Canadians can subscribe too with an additional $3 per month shipping charge. You can read more about the particulars in their FAQ and check out my reviews of past boxes here.

This month's theme is "Merry & Bright."

Darn that Santa, always having all the fun. WINK! Buying yourself a beauty box subscription is like being your own Santa year-round, so screw that guy. (Now let's hope my BB5 isn't filled with coal.)

Jaqua Pink Champagne Hand Creme travel size

Jaqua Pink Champagne Hand Creme (Travel size/2fl oz, value $12.50):
"Beauty essentials that let you satisfy your sweet tooth calorie free." I'm not sure what Pink Champagne is supposed to smell like, but this hand cream doesn't really have much of discernable scent at all for me... hmm. The formula is light and relatively non-greasy. I wasn't blown away by this hand cream, but I do appreciate that they're made in the USA.

Absolute! Nail Polish Remover Pads - Peach

Absolute! Nail Polish Remover Pads - Peach (32 pads, value $2.99):
A compact case of nail polish remover wipes—very handy for travel or sticking in your purse! I'll have to report back on how well these work, but they do smell fruity as the container would suggest... should I be sniffing nail polish remover though? Science.

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Moisturizer sample

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Moisturizer (Sample tube/0.26fl oz, approximate value $9.94):
I tried a sample of this moisturizer before (maybe it came with an Ulta order?) and liked it—not enough to get the full size, but I thought it was nice. Hydrating without being super-heavy or causing me to break out. I'm glad to see samples of Juice Beauty popping up in beauty boxes because the full sizes ain't cheap! Try before you buy = what it says on my family crest. Or something.

Lucky Number 6 Fragrance for Women EDP Sample

Lucky Number 6 Fragrance for Women EDP (Sample vial/0.06oz, approximate value $0.40):
A white floral fragrance with musky and woodsy notes. This sample made me laugh because the inside of the card said "Your elegant scent will attract many." Well then! But what if I only want to attract few? Quality not quantity, people. Anyway, I didn't really care for this scent—it was a bit soapy on me. Not my thing. Live and learn!

Nanacoco Nail Polish in Wonderland Basket

Nanacoco Nail Polish in Wonderland Basket (Full size/0.5oz, value $3.95):
What is in a "wonderland basket", you might ask? Apparently the answer is silver, gold and teal glitter. I like this polish—it's fun and festive, which I think is rather appropriate for the season. It smells STRONG (burn your nose hairs off strong) though, so definitely use it in a well-ventilated room.

Swatch:

I lost my nail swatch sticks. New Year's resolution: Be more organized.

Overall impressions:

While some of these samples didn't work out for me personally, I feel like Beauty Box 5 offered a reasonably good variety of different products this time around (and no floss—wooooo!) My personal favorite from this box is the glitterlicious Nanacoco polish, and the fact that they sent along some nail polish remover wipes in a box containing nail polish tickles me too. I have no need for the Juice Beauty moisturizer, but I have a feeling my mom will be excited to try it... stocking stuffers for all!

If you want to sign up for Beauty Box 5 yourself, you can do so here. New customers can get the previous month's box free as a bonus with any subscription length - just use code FREEBOX1 at checkout. They also have gift subscription options if you're scrambling for last-minute Hanukkah or Christmas ideas!

  2. I'm surprised to see Jaqua still kicking! I used to use their lotions back in college. Their buttercream frosting scent is absolutely insane. I also remember they used to (maybe still do) have little lip gloss rings that were so cute.

  3. I would say this bag is ok. The nail polish I think is the most exciting thing aside from the smell. I don't like that scent either.

  4. This looks pretty good. I could use some nail polish remover pads to take with me when I travel. I like that glitter nail polish, but I don't know if I could deal with a super strong smell!

  5. Unfortunately it doesn't smell like much of anything - oh well!

  6. I had never heard of Jaqua before, so that's interesting. Buttercream frosting sounds appealing.... I wish this one had more of a scent!

  7. Yeah, who really does like harsh nail polish smells? I can deal with it, but I have to remember to try and not breathe it in too much!

  8. Nail polish pads are super-handy for travel. I still haven't tried the ones from this box, but I've brought others with me on planes without a hassle!
