Memebox Boxing Day Box #2: Unboxing & GIVEAWAY!!!

Affiliate Links Bought It

Hey look, it's a Memebox unboxing! It's been a while since I did one of these. I managed to grab Memebox Boxing Day Box #2 during the big restock that happened last month, and guess what? I also managed to snag a second one to give away to one lucky reader. Woo! More info on that at the end of the post. But first, an in-depth look at the many wonders contained in Boxing Day Box #2. (Say that three times fast.)

Memebox Global Boxing Day Box #2 review unboxing info card

Memebox Boxing Day Box #2 was released in celebration of Boxing Day (no surprise there) and sold for the surprisingly low price of $12 + shipping. I won't get into my usual spiel about the various types of Memeboxes available because they are about to COMPLETELY change their modus operandi, but most of the boxes they've released over the past year have cost $23 and up, so $12 is quite low. Even more amazing, it turned out to be full of really awesome stuff!

Let's go through the contents bit by bit. Memebox started posting their info cards online recently (Boxing Day Box #2 can be found here), but I'll also be including the descriptions and instructions below for the sake of convenience.

Mise en Scène Perfect Repair Treatment Pack Ryo Anti Hair Loss Treatment sample

Mise en Scène Perfect Repair Treatment Pack (180ml - full size - value $16)

Info Card Product Description:
A simple 2-step hair care – shampoo and rinse – isn’t enough as the weather becomes chillier and drier. Twice a week, use this nourishing Perfect Repair Treatment Pack to deliver deep nutrition and repair and protect damaged hair ends. After shampoo, apply the treatment pack throughout your hair and rinse off after 2~3 minutes.

Hey look ma, it's conditioner! I've used this once so far and I think it's alright. Not the deepest conditioning treatment I've ever tried, but the plus side of that is that it doesn't weigh down fine hair or make it stringy. A reader once commented that Mise en Scène was like their "Pantene of Korea" and that seems apt.

Ryo Anti Hair Loss Treatment (50ml, approximate value $3)

Info Card Product Description:

Infused with biota seed, coix seed, green tea and gold extracts, this hair treatment will not only prevent hair loss but also re-energize and strengthen thin, damaged hair. Its excellent cooling formula will gently soothe and nourish your scalp at the same time. Apply generously over wet hair and massage the scalp with your fingertips. Wait for 2~3 minutes before rinsing off with warm water. Use daily.

Two important points not covered by the info card: One, you're supposed to use this after you shampoo. Two, the formula includes Salicylic Acid and Zinc Pyrithione, which probably provide more of an immediate benefit for the scalp than gold extracts and whatnot. This is an awesome, budget-friendly product though... I've been using samples I got from another Memebox lately and it really seems to be helping my flaky scalp.

Dr. Young Anti-Pore Pore Syok-Syok Cleansing Gel

Dr. Young Anti-Pore Pore Syok-Syok Cleansing Gel (2X 15ml, approximate value $6.72)

Info Card Product Description:
This gel-type deep cleanser penetrates deep down into pores to remove all excess oil, dirt, impurities, and sebum clogged up inside. A blend of morus bark, agrimonia eupatoria root extracts, and lime extracts deliver gentle yet effective sebum control and pore care. It’s oil-free, lightweight, and moisturizing as well. Create a lather and gently massage onto face. Rinse off with lukewarm water.

I don't think my pores are especially problematic, but I do like gel cleansers so I decided to give this a shot. I swiped a bit on a couple of pH strips and it seemed to register around 5.5-6, in case anyone cares. As for its cleansing abilities... it works fine! Unremarkable, but effective. What *is* special about this product is that it smells like limes. Delicious, juicy limes. Mmm.

banila co. Claypatra Mineral Salt Clay Pack samples

banila co. Claypatra Mineral Salt Clay Pack (2X 12g, approximate value $5.28)

Info Card Product Description:
The 100% pure mud extracted straight from the Dead Sea (consists 32% of salt and minerals) effectively removes any excess sebum, oil, dead skin cells, and external pollutants clogged up in the pores. The mineral-rich formula also delivers deep hydration and nourishment to dry, dull skin. How to use: Spread the clay pack evenly over clean face. Rest for 10 minutes and rinse off with lukewarm water. Gently massage with your finger tips to exfoliate dead skin cells while rinsing.

This feels like a salt scrub/mud mask hybrid. It's a bit rough and rather strongly fragranced, so I don't think I'd recommend it for sensitive skin. I tried this on the oilier parts of my face (nose, chin) and did seem to dry up oil whilst scrubbing my skin oh-so-smooth though, so I will say that it's effective.

SevenDrops High Protection Moringa Light Sunblock SPF50+ PA+++ Derma:B Fresh Moisture Body Lotion sample

SevenDrops High Protection Moringa Light Sunblock SPF50+ PA+++ (7g, approx. value $5.32):

Info Card Product Description:
A lightweight sunblock enriched with nourishing moringa extracts. The 100% naturally derived formula is extremely gentle to all skin types and free of paraben, mineral oil, benzophenone, silicon, and talc. It provides high level of UV protection and the light formula absorbs easily and smoothly into skin like an essence and leaves skin with a lingering moringa scent. Apply the sunblock evenly over clean face. Follow with foundation or BB application.

Serious question: Does anyone actually want the scent of sunscreen to "linger" on their face? So far I've just test-patched this—I need to find an ingredients list because some sunscreens irritate the crap out of my skin. The formula seems really light and nice though.

Derma:B Fresh Moisture Body Lotion (50ml, approximate value $2.38)

Info Card Product Description:
A nourishing body lotion targeting dry and sensitive skin types. It’s infused with tea tree, peppermint, bergamot, ginger, and amber notes in a refreshing herbal blend. Its gentle formula is non-sticky, fast-absorbing, and best kept refrigerated. Massage the lotion all over body after shower or before going to bed.

Don't let the boring packaging fool you: This lotion is great. It's super-duper light but very moisturizing, and has a pleasant herbal/citrus scent. One problem though... I liked it enough to go looking for it on a bunch of Korean shopping websites, and I can't find it anywhere. Some retailers have a product listing for it but it's always listed as out of stock... does that mean it's been discontinued? Sadness. Maybe I'll give their regular body lotion a try instead.

banila co. Clean It Zero - Original & Reversatol samples kit

banila co. Clean It Zero - Original & Reversatol (4X 7g, approximate value $6.16)

Info Card Product Description:
This makeup remover goes on as a sherbet-like balm and transforms into a silky oil that effortlessly dissolves makeup and sunscreen. Its non-greasy, gentle formula made from papaya, acerola, and herbal extracts cleanse thoroughly without dehydrating the skin. Take out the formula with the spatula and gently massage into skin. Rinse off with water or wipe away with a tissue.

I'm a big fan of oil-based cleansers for removing makeup, but I'm still not sure how I feel about these ones. On one hand the balm really does dissolve into a nice, "silky" texture, but on the other, I'm not sure if it cleanses as deeply as some of the other balms/oils I've tried. Further testing required. The Reversatol variety does smell very nice though!

Hanskin Bio Origin Royal Ampoule B.B SPF30 PA++

Hanskin Bio Origin Royal Ampoule B.B SPF30 PA++ (5ml, approximate value $7.71)

Info Card Product Description:
Hanskin’s famous Royal Ampoule BB cream is packed with rich nutritients from royal jelly extracts and it lightly glides over your skin when applied, leaving a visibly silkier, brightened complexion. Apply a single drop evenly over clean face. Blend it in using your fingers.

I'm borrowing an image from an old post because I already know that I'm not going to use this BB cream. The texture is actually really lovely, but the color isn't right for me. Also, the dropper mechanism is annoying. You could always get a mini spatula and scrape the product out into a different jar though.

TonyMoly BCDation All Master SPF30 PA++

TonyMoly BCDation All Master SPF30 PA++ (20g, approximate value $9.60)

Info Card Product Description:
This multi-functional BCDation from Tonymoly is a makeup base, a BB cream, a CC cream, and a foundation all in one. It not only correct, blur, and balance out the skin tone but also moisturizes, lifts, and adds extra volume for a silky smooth 3D complexion. Apply a pearl-sized amount evenly over clean face. Apply more onto T-zone and under eye areas for highlighting effect. Follow with powder application.

I swatched this on my hand and decided not to try it on my face because it seems to have a very strong yellow undertone (pic below). Great if you have yellow undertones, but on my NW15 skin it would probably look... strange.

Too Cool For School Dinoplatz Cinema City CC Cream

Too Cool For School Dinoplatz Cinema City CC Cream (10ml, approximate value $10)

Info Card Product Description:
Delivering abundant nutrition and moisture to your skin for an egg-smooth texture, this multi-functional CC cream will brighten up your complexion, protect from the sun, and take care of signs of aging as well. Evenly spread the CC cream all over clean, well moisturized face. Blend it in with your hands for better adherence to skin.

I haven't tried this on my face yet, but I swatched it on my hand (pic below) and it seems like it will actually be light enough for me, yay! Will have to report back. Also, can I point out how amazing the illustrations are on this product?

Witch's Pouch Radiant Lolli Tint in 03 Funky Bloom

Witch's Pouch Radiant Lolli Tint in 03 Funky Bloom (2.5g, approximate value $7.77)

Info Card Product Description:
This is a 3 in 1 must-have lip item that brings together the glossiness of lip glosses, naturally blending formula of lip tints, and the colorful radiance of lipsticks. It melts onto lips for a lasting pigmentation that instantly lights up your complexion with funky hot pink radiance. Apply directly to inner center of your lip and blend it outwards.

This tint looks extremely vibrant on the skin, but is a bit more subtle once applied on the actual lips. It also has a really nice grapefruit-y scent. Yum! I like it. Not my favorite lip tint of all time, but definitely a good one.

Overall impressions:
This was a truly great Memebox. I didn't end up loving every single thing in it, but there was a huge variety of products to try and I really love that they included more than one sample for some of them. I suppose the only negative aspect of this box is that most (or maybe all?) of the products in it were also featured in past Memeboxes, so the diehard Meme-fans may have had a lot of repeats on their hands. I think about half of the items in this box were new to me though, so yay.

Important changes to Memebox:
As of February 10th, Memebox Global will no longer be shipping outside the United States. If you are international and wish to place any final orders and/or use up your points, you must do so by 11:59 PM PST, February 10th, 2015. All existing orders will be shipped by the 13th of February.

I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed that they will no longer be shipping outside of the three countries they have a presence in (US, Korea, China). One of the really cool things about the Meme-verse was the international community that built up around it. I can understand why they would do this from a logistics perspective, but still, bummer. I'm not sure what this means for the future of the actual Memeboxes... they clearly will still be selling cosmetics through their US storefront, but I don't know if they'll be releasing mystery boxes that way in the future. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

In any case, you do have one more chance to get your hands on a Memebox even if you live outside the United States, because I picked up an extra of Boxing Day Box #2 to give away! Woo-hoo!

  1. To be honest, since Memebox started with their makeup line I just haven't been interested. They haven't been putting many boxes out lately and though it doesn't affect me, it sucks that they really screwed foreigners over.

  2. Thanks for mentioning the pH on the cleanser! Looks like a great box. :)

  3. The few items I've tried from the Meme-makeup line have been surprisingly OK, but I agree, it's not really that interesting to see only that. I hope they continue to have bundles/boxes with a variety of brands in the US shop, because otherwise... meh.

  4. You're welcome! Those pH strips aren't 100% accurate, but it's good to get a rough idea of the pH level at least. :)

  5. Thank you so much for the detailed review and fabulous giveaway! I am truly grateful. Also, I feel bad as a lot of meme fans won't be able to avail meme goodies anymore. I just hope there can be an alternative for them so they can still enjoy the same excitement as we do who are from the US.

  6. Nice giveaway thanks, now I just have to have my fingers crossed :) I can't believe Memebox are now stopping international shipping!! I will just have to go elsewhere for my K-beauty addiction! :) xx

  7. Thankfully there are still a lot of international-friendly sites for buying Korean brands... not much in the beauty box department though! WishTrend and Beauteque are the only ones I can think of that ship worldwide.

  8. For $12.00 this is a great box! You got a TON of stuff. They have a new review our products tab but every single box is sold out..ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  9. They reduced their number of ship-to countries for a while in 2014, so who knows, maybe they'll bring it back. I wouldn't count on it though. :P Thankfully there are lots of other sources for Korean beauty brands! TesterKorea and KoreaDepart have particularly large selections.

  10. Yeah a lot of the boxes for that promo sold out FAST. I'm sure they'll continue to release boxes and sets in the US shop, I just don't know if they'll still be doing the mystery angle. It also seems like most of the US-only boxes so far have been a bit more expensive on average. :(

    ReplyDelete
  11. I didn't even see an email about it El told me and I looked last week when she told me and all the boxes were already sold out.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I definitely got an e-mail about it - the subject line was "Review our boxes & get a full refund! While supplies last! :)" It probably wouldn't have mattered even if you got it though, because the really die-hard Memebox fans will usually catch big sales like that and start buying before the e-mail even goes out. What can you do? I certainly can't stalk their website 24/7, haha.

  13. yea lol I definitely don't check it everyday.

  14. I'm so sad I missed out this one. Everytime I checked it was out of stock :( It is such a great box! Apart from this I'm not happy that they don't ship internationally anymore...on the other hand, I will definitively safe some money now :D

  15. Wow, this is so sweet of you to do. I know I really appreciate it. Seeing as though I live in Australia, i'm pretty bummed about Memebox stopping international shipping... :( Memebox got me into Korean skin care, and im still learning about it, now I don't really have any other box services like Memebox that will suffice my new skin care addiction :(

  16. Great giveaway !
This box really intriguing me for quite some time...
In my country, my friend, just like you Rebecca, covers quite a bit of their boxes because she loves Korean cosmetics :-)

    Thanks !

  17. I'm lucky that I live in the US, huh? The palettes I won had such great staying power on my deepset lids that I'm now a fan.

  21. Awesome giveaway! I've loved all the Memeboxes I've purchased so far! It's so hard not to buy them as they add new ones but I need to pace myself or I'll never be able to use all the products! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree. Not sure if you were using Memebox a year ago, but they did cease shipping to a lot of countries for a while then start up again... not sure if that will happen again, but fingers crossed.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Before Memebox I used to just buy tons of sample packets from TesterKorea and eBay, so I guess you can still do that if you need your fix. It's definitely not the same though.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm glad you like them! And yes, definitely lucky to be in the US. Memebox actually just released another eyeshadow collab (a quad this time).

    ReplyDelete
  25. That's definitely true. I still have a few unopened products from Memeboxes I got months ago just because there are so many different things to get through, ahhh! I need to swap them or something. But I've also discovered a few new favorites through Memebox. They introduced me to a lot of brands I might not have otherwise thought to try.

  28. Great giveaway, I was sad to miss this box. It's such a shame that Meme stopped international deliveries. It seems like the company is on a suicide mission, I can't see how dumping so many loyal customers makes sense. And they did it with no attempt at all to retain international customer goodwill. I don't think they'll be back, and if they are I think they will have lost a big slice of their audience.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't really know what's going on behind the scenes at Memebox, but my guess is that that it is financial beneficial to them in the long run to drop international delivery (even if that means losing part of their customer base). I don't know how it is in every country, but Korean cosmetics do really seem to be taking off in America... which means growth potential even without the overseas crowd. It does really suck for international customers though, especially since a lot of folks are willing to pay extra shipping costs to get their goodies if that's what it takes. I'm surprised that they're not at least shipping to Canada and the US territories, as many US-based businesses do...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Great giveaway! I was sad to miss this box, originally and during the restocks. It was especially sad once I saw the contents of this. I'm rather bummed about Memebox changing their shipping as I've gotten cut off being Canadian. Thank goodness for sites like Tester Korea. #kbeautybloghop

  40. That's too bad! :( At least you can still order Korean cosmetics from other places! Thank you. :)

  41. Have you looked into package forwarding services like Parcel Bound? I think their site is parcelbound.com You can order from US shops, have them ship it to the US address you're given through Parcel Bound and they forward it to you once they receive it. :)

  42. :) thank you for your reply! I didn't know about this website but I did use a similar one (a loooong time ago) as I wanted to order from modcloth but the fees (back in France) were huge... bad experience :/ But thank you!!!
