So I guess mystery boxes are now officially a "thing" for Memebox USA, because they released a new one themed around the Lunar New Year last week. And they still seem to be shipping really quickly, because I ordered this box on Thursday and got it in the mail yesterday (Saturday). Like, whoa. Should we have a peek inside?
New to Memebox? They're an internet retailer of Korean cosmetics (and beauty boxes) with a presence in the United States, Korea, and China. Memebox is not a subscription-based service, and you can buy boxes whenever you choose. Pricing varies depending on the contents, and all Memebox orders over $30 ship free.
The Lunar New Year Mystery box was released in very limited quantity and cost $25 plus shipping ($6.95 or free on orders $30+). Just like the Leaders Mystery box I reviewed last week, this box didn't come with an info card, so I shall paste the shop description here for reference:
"Happy Lunar New Year! Let’s start the Lunar year with a bottle of sake, champagne, and a whole lot of red and gold! Skin care is our top priority, and this will get you ready to step out with your best face forward. This box contains items valued at $48, but for a limited time, you can get it for only $25. Get it while supplies last!"
Sounds good to me! Let's see what was in it.
Missha Near SKIN Total Repairing Hydro Gel Mask (1x 28g mask, value $5):
This is a gel-type facial mask that supposedly reacts with your body temperature and "melts" for deeper penetration into the skin. Uh... that sounds kind of scary but. I'm thinking it probably won't actually melt, but I guess we'll see! And oh look, the red and gold package is perfect for the theme of this box.
Skinfood Peach Sake Toner (Full size/135ml, value $13.75):
Memebox doesn't seem to carry this in their shop anymore, so I'm going by Amazon prices (which seem fair, as this retails for about 9,000원 in Korea (US ~$8), and shipping a heavy glass bottle will certainly set you back a few bucks. I believe this toner is meant to help reduce the appearance of pores and excess sebum. I don't have major issues with large pores or skin oiliness so I haven't decided if I'm going to try this or swap it yet. I bet it smells nice, and that's tempting me to keep it.
TonyMoly Apple Hand Cream (Full size/30g, value $9):
Korean brands seem to really excel at novelty hand creams. So cute I DIED, etc. The packaging for this one is basically just a smaller version of the apple that Appletox Honey Cream comes in. Mama and baby. The cream itself is opaque and sort of yellowish in color, and much like Appletox, smells like delicious fresh apples. I think this is a little too rich for me to use during the day as it takes a while to sink in, but I can dig it for bedtime.
XO Memebox I'm Cream Shadow in #04 Best Dresser (Full size/3.5g, value $7.50):
Memebox started releasing their own line of budget makeup and skincare last year. I've tried a few things and so far they've all been decent, but this is my first experience with their cream shadows. I don't buy a lot of cream shadows because they have a relatively short shelf life, but I must say, daaaamn this one is gorgeous. Best Dresser is sort of a rose gold-ish shade with a LOT of sparkle (see swatch below). The formula is also easy and non-messy to apply. I'll have to wear it a few times before I can comment on longevity.
It's Skin Babyface Gel Pencil Eyeliner in 05 Champagne Pink (Full size/3.5g, value $7.89):
A sparkly, champagne-colored gel liner with a waterproof formula. This turned out to be a lot sparklier than I expected—maybe not what I'd use for everyday office makeup, but really lovely if you want to glam things up a bit. I would most likely use this as a highlight around the tear duct or lower waterline.

Total value: Approximately $43.14
I think this was a really well-curated box. Everything fit really nicely with the theme—red and gold, celebratory drink (sake, champagne) etc. I also like and will use most of the items in it. I'm still undecided about the Skinfood toner simply because I'm not sure if it suits my skin type, but Skinfood certainly isn't a bad brand in general.
My only minor complaint is that this box falls a little short of the promised $48 value. Maybe because Memebox was charging more for the Skinfood toner when they carried it? Not sure. I honestly don't care too much about getting high dollar value products in my beauty boxes—I want to get more than what I paid for, but it doesn't necessarily need to be double or triple the amount. That said, if a beauty box company does promise a certain value, I expect them to deliver (or even overdeliver with extra samples, freebies etc.)
Minor gripe over. I'm really glad that Memebox is still selling mystery boxes, and that $25 boxes seem to be a recurring thing (as the standard price for the Korean boxes was $23), and that some thought seems to be going into the curation. This all bodes well for the future.
The Lunar New Year box is now sold out, but you can browse the boxes that Memebox currently has in stock here. Be sure to check out my Memebox Deals & Coupons page to see if there are any applicable coupons before ordering!
