Weekly Poll | Getting Trashed

Happy Wednesday, everybody! Are you excited that it's almost March? Am I excited that it's almost my birthday? Yes, yes I am.

This week's topic is a hybrid question and challenge, and was inspired my recent urge to declutter. Over the past month or so I've been gradually getting rid of stuff I don't need or use, reading books and blogs about organization, etc. Thankfully e-books are a thing now, so they don't end up adding to the clutter. So here's the question/challenge:

  • Step one: Look through your stuff and identify something you've been meaning to get rid of or haven't used in ages. Doesn't have to be something in your home—it can be in your car, desk at work, purse, backpack, etc. What is it? Let us know in the comments!
  • Step two: I challenge you to get rid of it right now. Throw in the trash, toss it in a donation box, call up a friend and ask if they want it. Right now!
  • Step three: If you have such little clutter in your life that you can't think of anything to get rid of, congratulations! You win this non-game.

As for me... I decided to clear something out of my beauty drawer. I found a partially-used bottle of Vitamin C serum that was ANCIENT, like had been opened over a year ago, which clearly is not something I need to hang onto. I dumped the contents and rinsed the bottle so I could recycle it. Yay!

So... what did you get rid of?

  1. I have no problem getting rid of most things. I get rid of clothes and makeup quarterly. I def need to go through my closets and cabinets and get rid of other crap.

  2. Okay, I thought I missed your birthday (I just read your Bite lipstick post). I just did a gigantic clear out of clothes, handbags (although I only had a few to give up), and cosmetics. I had been holding onto a ton of skincare from my Sephora days, and knew I was never going to use it, so I got over the sentimental feelings and threw almost all of it away. It was all expired, so I didn't feel comfortable donating it. I have a really hard time getting rid of stuff, so it was a big deal for me. Decluttering is pretty satisfying once it's over, though.

  3. Hah, thanks for the birthday wishes anyway! It's actually on the 29th, which doesn't exist this year, but that's another matter. I like to start celebrating early. Anyway, I have a hard time getting rid of stuff too so I know how you feel. I had to get rid of most of my belongings when I moved overseas for grad school, so ever since I moved back to the US I feel extra-reluctant to get rid of things. That wasn't a fun experience. But in thinking about it in that context, I really have accumulated a lot of stuff in the last five years... eep.

  4. I was impressed with how much stuff you managed to clear out with your makeup de-stash posts! I haven't even started going through my closet yet because I know it's going to be difficult. I have a lot of stuff that doesn't fit anymore, but it's just so hard to let it go...
