I will never claim to be an expert home decorator, but lately I've been working extra hard to eliminate clutter and just generally make my space look nicer. For those of you who don't know, I live in a smallish two bedroom apartment, which can make storing things in a way that looks nice a bit challenging. (Not to mention the fact that our place has kind of a weird layout, but that's another story for another time.) Renuzit® (makers of delightful-smelling and potent air fresheners) recently gave me the opportunity to do a little budget-minded home makeover inspired by their new Pearl Scents® scent varieties, so I thought I'd share what I did! If you've been needing to declutter, perhaps this will serve as inspiration (or you can just laugh at how little space I have). Oh, and there may be a chance for you to win some Renuzit® Pearl Scents® at the end of the post too. :) Keep reading!
Renuzit® Pearl Scents® are available in five scents:
- Blue Sky Breeze
- Sparkling Rain
- Fresh Lavender & Eucalyptus
- Chamomile & Jasmine
- Seductive Pineapple
Personally I know that I prefer "fresh" scents like Blue Sky Breeze and Sparkling Rain, but if you're not sure which one to get, check out Renuzit's Pearlsonality quiz! I'm also a big fan of blue and green color schemes too, so I decided to use that as the inspiration for my mini home makeover.
Anyway, the area in my home most in need of a makeover was, without question, my bedside table. The majority of my personal belongings live in my "woman cave" (AKA home office), but I do most of my nighttime skincare routine whilst lounging in bed, so things can get a bit cluttered around there. Observe:
Mmm, piles of tubes. My goals for the bedside area were simple: Make it look neater, cuter, and more "light". There's something you should know about my bedside table though...
It's actually just one of those cheap folding TV dinner tables with a cheap pashmina thrown on top. Classy! One of the challenges of living in a small apartment is that traditional furniture doesn't always fit—in our case, anything deeper or wider than the TV table would completely block one of the closet doors.
There's probably a mini side table out there that would fit into this weird little space, but new furniture isn't in my budget at the moment, especially when you consider the extra cost of having it delivered or hiring a man with a van. (Neither Stan or I drive, so doing a quick Zipcar trip to Ikea isn't really an option.) Anyway, the reason I'm mentioning this is to point out the fact that I needed to find bedside storage that was also physically light. Those little folding tables can be surprisingly sturdy, but they're not going to hold a 70 pound storage drawer system. You catch my drift.
Solution: Head on over to HomeGoods and pick up some inexpensive accents to corral the mess and make the table look nicer!
The first thing I looked for was something nice to cover the table with. I found a really nice (and sturdy) 100% cotton tablecloth in a color scheme that I liked for a reasonable price ($12.99). They had a variety of tablecloth sizes, but I went for square—easier to pin up and conform to the dimensions of the (rectangular) table.
Next on the list: Some sort of light (but cute) way to corral the many, many tubes. I found some adorable painted crates at HomeGoods in various sizes, and the smallest one ($9.99) seemed like the perfect size for housing all my products. The only thing that didn't fit from the original photo was that massive tub of CeraVe, but I never use that in bed anyway, so it didn't really need to be there. Don't forget that part of home mini-makeovers is decluttering or moving stuff to a more appropriate part of the house!
Last but certainly not least, I added a few accents to make the table look a little more fun.
I printed out a picture of me and Stan and put it in a cute little square frame ($4.99). Stan frowned when he saw this and said "Isn't there a nicer picture of us?" No, no there isn't (because he always makes weird faces like that in pictures). It's OK though, it still makes me smile.
Next I added a little candle holder ($5.99). I don't plan on burning candles on my bedside table, but little decorative holders make great receptacles to keep smaller objects in (like mini skincare tubes, lip balms, hair clips, etc.)
And of course I couldn't forget the Renuzit® Pearl Scents®! True story: We keep our laundry baskets in our bedroom because that's the only place where there's room for them, so things can get a bit... feety. Air fresheners = a scent makeover for your feetiest of areas. (I live with a guy, what do you want?)
We also picked up one more special little accent whilst we were at HomeGoods.
Everyone needs a ceramic dinosaur to keep next to their bed/skincare hoarding zone, right? Especially when it's on sale for just $7. (By the way, Stan wanted to bring this thing home even more than I did... we're both weirdos, but at least we're weird together.)
