Hey hey hey! Special news bulletin: I've got a review for you guys today. But not just any review... it's a review of a sheet mask. I know, I know, exotic stuff. But it's not just any sheet mask, it's a 3D sheet mask. Be still, my beating heart!

The 3D mask in question is My Scheming's Bamboo Charcoal & Cryste Marine Whitening Double Lifting Mask. And the name of this product isn't nearly long enough, amirite? I picked these up in my latest Sasa.com haul.

If you have no idea what a sheet mask is and you're wondering what the hell I'm talking about, read this. If you more experienced sheet mask users are wondering how 3D masks differ from regular sheet masks, basically they cover more of your face and purport to conform more easily to a variety of face shapes. Great for increased hydration and/or as an impromptu Halloween costume:

SEE YOU IN YOUR DREAMS.

My Scheming is a Taiwanese brand that typically has very cute illustrations on its packaging - I posted a picture of a few of their masks here a while back, and the mask of the day is certainly no exception. Here's a full shot of the front and back of the box:

My Scheming Bamboo Charcoal & Cryste Marine Whitening Double Lifting Mask 3D

I would say that the construct of My Scheming's "regular" sheet masks is pretty similar to My Beauty Diary - similar varieties, similar mask shape, similar level of wetness. I prefer the texture of the My Beauty Diary masks I've tried, but My Scheming hasn't done me wrong so far, so I was wondering how their 3D masks would compare to their standard offerings. The box pictured above cost US $7.40 at the time of purchase and came with five individually wrapped masks inside, which look a little something like this:

Here's are the particulars of this mask as according to Sasa.com:

My Scheming Bamboo Charcoal & Cryste Marine Whitening Double Lifting Mask contains bamboo charcoal extract to hydrate, repair and brighten all types of skin. Tea tree and allantoin help tighten pores. It leaves skin brighter and smoother. The 3D elastic mask fabric, imported from Japan, is imprinted with over 600 elastic, rhombus-shaped grids to provide the face and the neck a comprehensive lifting.

Ingredients:

  • 【Bamboo Charcoal Extract】activates cells and boosts blood circulation, and acts as adsorbent.
  • 【Melaleuca Alternifolia】has antiseptic, anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, healing and anti-mould virtues.
  • 【Chamomile Extract】has anti-inflammatory, itching-relieving, disinfecting and allergy-alleviating virtues.
  • 【Cucumber Extract】has hydrating, anti-inflammatory, moisturizing and calming virtues.
  • 【Water Lily】has astringent, antiseptic, wound-healing and antioxidant virtues, captures free radicals, calms, etc.
  • 【Glyoxyldiureide】has anti-inflammatory and soothing virtues, and aids in the regeneration of skin tissues.

I love a skincare product with virtues. Here's the full list of ingredients off the package:

So basically this is supposed to hydrate, repair and brighten. Pretty standard stuff. What isn't standard is the physical design of the mask - here's a close-up of those 600 elastic, rhombus-shaped grids:

In other words, it's quilted. Up close this mask looks sort of like baby wipes or toilet paper, but the fiber is much thicker and harder to tear.

The other thing about this mask that differentiates it from the standard My Scheming masks is its "double lifting" abilities.:

You see how there are two sets of loops? That bottom panel tucks under the chin and then loops over the ears to stay in place. And the other loops go over your ears as well, pushing the entire face back and upwards, aka "double lifting", as illustrated here:

I really ought to replace that headband. Anyway, My Scheming's blahblahblah Double Lifting Mask is is not the only mask of this kind - you can check out my review of SexyLook's Chamomile & Honey mask for another example of something similar. But the whole 3D/double lifting thing is definitely a more premium version of the typical sheet mask experience. For those of you wondering about scent, this has a very light and fresh oceany fragrance. Nothing overwhelming or offensive.

So, how did it perform as a skincare item? This mask was nicely saturated with serum and somewhat hydrating, though it definitely wasn't the most moisturizing mask I've tried. I was recovering from a nasty breakout around my chin when I used this and I do feel like it had some anti-inflammatory effects. I didn't notice any immediate whitening or "brightening" results, but the mask was soothing. In other words, it was a decent relaxation mask but I didn't notice any particularly mind-blowing benefits.

One thing I will say in its favor: The physical construction of this mask is truly excellent. The fiber is soft, thick and extremely flexible. I'm not sure if you can tell from the photos above, but this mask covered my face with room to spare, so if you're one of those people who find most sheet masks to be too small for your face then this might be a good one to try. The extra fabric on this mask is has its downsides too though... on one hand it fits comfortably and easily, but on the other hand it's not tight enough to truly create a "lifting" effect. I do like how much of the neck this mask covers - some masks like this just tuck below the chin.

Anyway, I like these OK but I'm not blown away enough to run down the street screaming their virtues. I will certainly use up the box though.

Bottom Line: My Scheming's Bamboo Charcoal & Cryste Marine Whitening Double Lifting Mask is a decent (but unremarkable) sheet mask with a premium feel. Its soft and flexible shape may be well-suited to people who have fitting troubles with regular sheet masks and/or want something that will cover more of their neck than standard masks do.

Where to buy: I got mine from Sasa.com. These also pop up on eBay from time to time so you can try your luck there!

Have you ever tried a 3D or "double lifting" mask?

    1. They are so cute! I've even kept a couple of the plastic boxes that the My Scheming 7 day kits came in. They're a good size for storing notecards. :)
