Indie Friday: A few tidbits from the Haus of Gloi Autumn 2014 Collection

Bought It

You know it's almost fall when you start contemplating picking up pumpkin scented bath goods. I've been able to resist the pumpkininny-ness of this seasonal transition so far, but I did find myself browsing the Haus of Gloi autumn release and ending up with some Halloween candy-scented items instead. Oops. Yay? I didn't go totally wild with my purchasing this time, but I thought I'd share my thoughts on the few items I did get for future reference and posterity.

Everything came wrapped up in tissue with fall leaves printed on it. Aww.

For those unfamiliar, Haus of Gloi is a vegan bath, body and perfume online shop based out of Oregon. They make extremely lovely-smelling things, especially if you're into sweet or foodie scents, because they seem to do those extra super-duper well. The downside of this is that they're EXTREMELY popular—a lot of their seasonal items seem to sell out mere hours after they're listed. They just did a restock of their autumn collection yesterday and a lot of it is already sold out, gah! The good news is that I think they'll be stocking their shop again sometime in the next month with whipped soaps and other things that are too melty to sell in the summer. I recommend subscribing to their e-mail newsletter and following them on Facebook if you want more specific info about that kind of thing.

Aaaaaanyway, let's look at what I got!

Ghost Puffs Perfume Oil (Full sized, 5ml, $15):

Haus of Gloi Ghost Puffs Perfume Oil 5ml full sized

Shop description: Buttery popcorn and marshmallow goo orbs, presented on a wooden stick.

Ghost Puffs was the main reason I placed this order. Maybe it's just a sign of being hungry, but I reallt wanted to smell like buttery popcorn and marshmallows. So sue eat me. I tested this on Stan first without telling him what it was, to see how accurate the scent was ... he exclaimed "I smell like buttered popcorn! No wait ... vanilla-y buttered popcorn!!!" I'd say spot on, then.

To me this also smells like it has a faint "smoke" note lingering around in the background—is that the "wooden stick"? In any case, the buttery notes wore off pretty quickly (maybe within an hour or two?) and the sweet/smoke remained. Just like real ghost puffs, this doesn't last long, but it's oh-so-sweet while it does.

The Horseman Perfume Oil Sample ($3)

Haus of Gloi perfume sample vials

Shop description: Autumnal forest and wood, distant fire, smooth saddle leather, brown musk and the lingering scent of a dark gentleman's cologne on a black woolen coat.

I ordered a sample of this because I wasn't sure how I would feel about it, but it's actually pretty awesome in its own way. I would describe this as a dark, very masculine cologne-type scent. The leather note is most prominent to my nose, however there is a good bit of muskiness and a little bit of woodsiness and something else in there? This is not a fragrance I would choose if I wanted to smell especially dainty or feminine, but if you like leather/masculine scents it's worth picking up. As for me, I'm not sure I would use something like this often enough to justify getting the full-sized bottle, but I will certainly continue to use this sample on days when I'm in a mood for something different.

Haus of Gloi also stuck a free sample of Moon Dog from their permanent catalog in the order, but I haven't tried it yet. Will report back on that. Maybe.

Lip Balm - Candy Corn ($3.50)

Haus of Gloi candy corn lip balm

This is actually my first time trying Haus of Gloi's lip balms, and I like the formula. I don't think it's my favorite, but it's good. Would order again. "Candy Corn" smells sort of like candy corn ... maybe if you took candy corn and melted it into some sort of diabolical Halloween Rice Krispie Treat. In any case it's yummy, and goes well with the whole "I smell like a food" thing I've got going on with Ghost Puffs. I asked Stan to sniff this and tell me what it smelled like, and he said "Fruit. No ... NIGHT FRUIT!"

Um, what?

Overall impressions:
I really liked all three of the things I picked up, and depending on how broke I am when they release their whipped soaps and whatnot I may be tempted to pick some of those up in more pumpkininny scents. And possibly a Honeysuckle Lemon Curb Pumpkin Butter (body butter) from their permanent collection, because it's just that awesome.

You can browse what's left of the Autumn Collection here, and don't forget to subscribe to Haus of Gloi's e-mail list/Facebook if you want updates about future releases!

Have you started picking up any "fall" scented stuff yet? What do you think "night fruit" is?!

  5. Haha that's a good point! Thought maybe you're sick of buttered popcorn by now? And I think "marshmallow goo orbs" sound delicious pretty much all the time. Now I want to make s'mores.
