Indie | Fyrinnae Lip Lustre in Meloncholy: A Review

Bought It

I recently ordered a few Fyrinnae eyeshadows I'd had my eye on for a while, and somehow a mini of one of their Lip Lustres ended up in my cart too—very mysterious. Or maybe not that mysterious, since I had never tried any of their lip products before and Meloncholy was calling to me. Melon-calling to me. (Insert drum rimshot SFX.) Was it worth the impulse buy? Read on to find out!

Fyrinnae is perhaps one of the most popular indie makeup companies—they've been around for several years and are particularly well-known for their gorgeous loose eyeshadows. All of their products are vegan and cruelty-free, which is somewhat rare for lip products even in the indie world—beeswax tends to find its way into a lot of lip product formulas.

From what I can tell, Fyrinnae's Lip Lustres would probably be best described as liquid lipstick with a glossy finish. They're more pigmented and opaque than most glosses, but still nice and shiny. The shade Meloncholy is described as "A semi-sheer bright coral-melon shade with a slight shimmer." (Get it? Melon-choly? Har har har.) Lip Lustres are available in a wide variety of shades and cost $7 for an 8ml tube (or $2.50 for a 1.5ml sample tube, which is what I purchased).

Meloncholy is a bit sheer (as it says in the description), so it took a couple of coats to get to that level of pigmentation. I thought it looked a bit strange with just one coat—kind of patchy and uneven? That could be partially due to the teensy wand size in the sample vial though.

I have mixed feelings about this formula. On one hand, it's very moisturizing—not just "won't parch your lips", but comfortable to wear for long periods, which is awesome. The color is also very pretty. On the other hand, I wasn't crazy about the texture. It's not sticky like gloss, but it felt a bit less smooth than I would have liked. I also felt like I had to take great care to make sure it was applied evenly, or else it would kind of separate on my lips into unattractive chunks.

Other thoughts... it has a slight vanilla-ish smell. I don't love it, I don't hate it. The wear time is relatively short on me (maybe a couple of hours if I'm not eating), but that's not unusual for gloss-like products.

Based off this experience, I'm not sure what to think of Fyrinnae's Lip Lustres. Meloncholy is a wonderful color, but I don't really like the formula. I do find myself wondering if the application might go a bit smoother with a full-sized tube, but if that's the case, why offer minis at all? Mysteries. Maybe the next time I order from Fyrinnae, I'll grab a full-sized tube of one of the other shades to see.

Where to buy: You can browse all of the Fyrinnae Lip Lustres here. If you reach a page that says "We'll be back soon" or something instead of the product catalog, try back later—sometimes they temporarily shut down their site when they need to catch up on orders.

  1. I love the color! I'm pretty picky about lip products like this, but I'd be willing to give these a try.

  5. Very true! I'm really glad they sell minis of most of their products.

  6. Why not give them a shot? The minis are only $2,50, not too shabby!

  7. I've not tried any of the lip lustres, although I've considered trying a little size of Romantique. I noticed the mini's went up in price to $4.50, which seems like kind of a lot for a wee trial size. They do do a nice job naming their stuff -- "Pygmy Hippo" for a lip product is great.

  8. The mini vials are still $2.50. Fyrinnae's menu is a bit confusing because it says "-$4.50", meaning they subtract that much from the $7 full-sized price (so the minis will be $2.50 in your cart). Agreed about the names! Pygmy Hippo looks like a pretty color too.
