I love the convenience of lip crayons. Liquid lipsticks and tints are probably the best choice when you want bulletproof color that won't budge, but sometimes you just need something you can toss in your purse and swipe on as needed for a bit of color. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Butter London's extensive collection of nail lacquers, but lately they've been really stepping up their game with other color cosmetics—lip crayons, eyeliners, mascaras (oh my)! Today I'll be swatching the Butter London Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon collection, which really does live up to its name. Oh, and my readers have a chance to win seven of these crayons for themselves—wheeeeee! Read on for all the bloody brilliant details.

Product description:
Long-lasting, all-in-one formula delivers lacquer-like shine and high-fashion colour. Why it's Brill:
  • All-in-one formula created for the Bezzie Mate on-the-go
  • Intense shine of a gloss
  • Highly pigmented colour with the full coverage of a lipstick
  • Slimline pencil with built-in sharpener is perfect for on-the-go lip lining
  • Helps to improve lip moisturization with Mango Seed Oil and Marula Oil
  • Formulated to provide antioxidant protection
  • Niacinamide helps maintain the skin barrier for smoother, more even lip tone

Bezzie Mate on the go or no, all of the crayons in this collection do indeed provide a high level of shine. It's hard for me to tell if the nominal amount of Niacinamide in the formula is really doing anything for my pout, but these lippies feel quite moisturizing, which makes them great for everyday wear.

Pricing/availability:
Each 0.1oz crayon retails for $20. Look for them on Amazon, ButterLondon.com, and Ulta.com.

One cool feature of these lip crayons is that they have a sharpener built right into the cap—no hunting around for one while you're on the go. You do need to be a bit careful while uncapping the crayon so as not to pull off the sharpener as well, but I still think it's a cool feature and not that much of a hassle.

Now without further ado, some swatches!

Butter London lip swatch swatches Disco Biscuit Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon

Disco Biscuit Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon: An opaque, bubblegum pink creme.

This is a true opaque bubblegum pink, perfect for all the candy lovers out there. I don't usually go for lighter pinks like this because they wash me out, but Disco Biscuit is juuuuust dark enough to look good.

Butter London lip swatch swatches Ladybird Blood Brilliant Lip Crayon

Ladybird Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon: An opaque, tomato red creme.

Hot tomato! I first posted about Ladybird here, and I still love it—it's a bold a bold and classic red with a spike of orange to help keep things interesting. The lasting power is excellent too. (FYI: This shade isn't included in the giveaway because Butter London sent it to me for review months ago—just wanted to include it here for the sake of having a full set of swatches!)

Butter London lip swatch swatches Primrose Hill Picnic Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon

Primrose Hill Picnic Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon: An opaque, tropical pink creme.

Bold and beautiful hot pink. Primrose Hill Picnic is a little bright for everyday wear (even for me), but I can imagine busting it out for an evening out on the town. I can also imagine it looking gorgeous on darker skintones.

Butter London lip swatch swatches Ruby Murray Blood Brilliant Lip Crayon

Ruby Murray Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon: An opaque, deep berry creme.

Reddish berry. This is one of the sheerer shades in the collection, but it's very beautiful.

Butter London lip swatch swatches Tea with the Queen Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon

Tea with the Queen Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon: An opaque, light nude creme.

A true nude for nude-lovin' dudes (and dudettes). I for one think colors like this look terrible on me, but YMMV depending on your skintone. It has the lovely texture and shine of the rest of the collection, at least.

Butter London lip swatch swatches Teddy Boy Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon

Teddy Boy Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon: An opaque, rosy creme.

A light, rosy pink—a "my lips but better" shade for me. On the subtler/more natural end of the spectrum, but very pretty nonetheless!

Butter London lip swatch swatches Toff Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon

Toff Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon: An opaque, red grape creme.

Another berry shade, this time with a slightly more purplish/brownish undertone. And like Ruby Murray, it's on the sheerer side. I like Ruby Murray better because I think the red tones look better with my skin, but Toff is also lovely in its own way.

Butter London lip swatch swatches Trout Pout Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon

Trout Pout Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon: An opaque, light coral creme.

This crayon wins two major awards from me: Best name (TROUT POUT!) and best overall color. It's hard not to love a bright pinkish coral... it goes with so many things! And that shine, my goodness.

Overall impressions:
I really like the Butter London Bloody Brilliant Lip Crayon collection. I think some of the shades perform better than others in terms of longevity, but all of them are non-drying and extremely pigmented, which sets them apart from a lot of other lip crayons out there.

For me, the best performers in terms of overall opacity and length of wear were Ladybird, Primrose Hill Picnic, and Trout Pout, clocking it at around three to four hours each. I would consider that to be good performance for a lip crayon. All of the others are nice though—and it's not like it's difficult to toss a lip crayon in your purse for touch-ups, especially with the built-in sharpener.

The one positive attribute of these crayons that's also sort of a negative is their softness. They glide on easily, smooth as butter, but if they're kept in a warm environment they tend to smush or break if you're not careful. Not a dealbreaker—toss 'em in the fridge for a bit and they're as good as new. But be careful applying them on a hot day.
