Review & Swatches: Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color

So I don't know about you, but I'm loving the fact that bold, deep lip colors are so trendy right now. I used to be one of those people who never wore lipstick because I was scared of it smearing and getting all over my teeth, but lately I've been finding myself wanting to wear darker and bolder shades on my lips.

Today I'll be doing a little review and some swatches of Wet n Wild's MegaLast lipstick. These have been out for a while, but at around $2 apiece they are a very inexpensive way to expand your collection of lip colors. Perfect if you want to test out some of those fall-friendly shades without busting the budget, eh?

Wet n Wild Mega Last Lip Color inPurty Persimmon 970 Vamp It Up 919B Sugar Plum Fairy 908C Stoplight Red 911D Cherry Bomb 918D Pink Suga' 900B

Wet n Wild currently has a whopping 26 shades of MegaLast Lip Color listed on their website. Today I'll be showing you six of them as pictured above:

  • Top L-R: Purty Persimmon (970), Vamp It Up (919B), Sugar Plum Fairy (908C)
  • Bottom L-R: Stoplight Red (911D), Cherry Bomb (918D), Pink Suga' (900B)

Product description from the Wet n Wild website:

Lips take center stage! This 4-hour, longwearing lip color leaves a semi-matte, crème finish in one stroke. Glides on easily with rich, velvety color that doesn't cake, feather, or bleed. Made with hydrating skin-care ingredients: Hyaluronic Microspheres provide extraordinary adhesion to lips, an exclusive polymer complex offers cushion-like feel and texture, and natural marine plant extracts Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamins A & E help smooth lips.

I think it's sort of weird that they're touting the hydrating aspects of these lipsticks when they're really not very hydrating at all. In fact, I found all of them to be pretty dry. I feel like most of them did apply smoothly, with the only exception being Pink Suga' - that one had a tendency to go on unevenly and cling to dry patches. A light coating of lip balm underneath made it wearable though.

As for feathering and bleeding, these are actually pretty good. I didn't have too many problems with these traveling all over my face, though if you're using one of the darker colors I'd still probably pair it with a lipliner.

And as for the 4-hour claim, I think one could probably get 3-4 hours of wear out of these without a touchup... if you're not eating anything, that is. These will not last through a meal, especially if you're eating something messy. Trust me, I tried eating a Subway sandwich whilst wearing Stoplight Red and was left with a rather amusing red ring around my mouth.

And now for the swatches. First, in natural/indirect light:

Next, with flash:

One of the things that should be noted about these lipsticks is that they do stain a bit. Here's my arm after several vigorous rubs with a makeup remover wipe:

L-R: Pink Suga', Purty Persimmon, Stoplight Red, Cherry Bomb, Sugar Plum Fairy, Vamp It Up

After a hot shower and a good scrub I got 99% of it off, but yeah. Whoa.

I thought I'd also share a few pictures of me wearing these lipsticks. Please keep in mind that most of these were taken during various phases of makeup application or removal so these are not full makeup "looks" or whatever, but I feel like it's helpful to know how these will look on an actual face.

L: Purty Persimmon - R: Sugar Plum Fairy

Both of the above were taken in natural, indirect light. The "Sugar Plum Fairy" photo came out sort of weird - I feel like it looks a bit more purple than that in person.

L: Cherry Bomb - R: Stoplight Red

Both taken indoors, with flash, at night. AKA the worst time to take pictures ever.

Vamp It Up

You may remember these pictures from my recent post on eyeliner stickers. I thought Vamp It Up was a really appropriate color for a Halloween-type post because it's so dark and dramatic. I think it would make a great alternative for those scared to wear full-on black lipstick, actually.

I didn't manage to get a picture of Pink Suga'. Sorry about that. On me it registers as a very light nude color - my boyfriend said he could barely tell I had anything on while I was wearing it.

Packaging and overall impressions:

I'm not going to lie: I don't exactly love the tubes that MegaLast lip colors come in. Here, lookie:

The lipsticks don't retract all the way into the tube and they have clear caps, which of course means that you're going to get lipstick-colored smudges all up in the crevices. This is one of those stupid little pet peeves of mine - I really don't like it when my cosmetics look messy so I've already gone in there and wiped it off with a Q-tip a few times. But eventually I'll probably give up and just let them get all gross.

Aesthetics aside, the tubes are perfectly functional. They are plastic and feel a bit cheap, but that also means they're slim and lightweight so not terribly inconvenient to carry around.

The rounded tips of these lipsticks might also prove inconvenient depending on your lip shape. Personally I don't find them unusable, but I do prefer a more classic, pointy lipstick.

Overall, I like these lipsticks and think they're a good buy for the price. The only one from this batch I probably wouldn't repurchase is Pink Suga' because I think it's sort of chalky and difficult to apply as compared to the rest, but the others are all nicely pigmented and easy to wear. I don't know if I'll be buying any of the other colors at this point, but if you want to see some of the others in action then I recommend checking out this post over at Vampy Varnish.

Bottom Line:
Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Colors are a bargain-priced way to expand your lipstick collection. The semi-matte formula has decent lasting power, but might be a bit drying so I would recommend applying a light layer of lip balm on underneath.

Where to buy: Folks in the USA can buy Wet n Wild at various drugstores and mass-merchandisers or online at Walgreens.com. I have no idea if/where you can get Wet n Wild outside the USA, so if you know feel free to share in the comments?

Which of these colors do you like the best? What are your favorite drugstore lipsticks?

Please note: I have labelled this post as "vegan" because some (but not all) of these shades are vegan. For more specific info I recommend checking out WnW's FAQ.

  1. Once again, you've made me so jealous. Haha. Wet N Wild seems like better quality than our budget lipsticks. True to colour or not, Sugar Plum Fairy looks awesome on you.

    1. That was actually the first one I got of the bunch! Wet n Wild is another one of those brands that can be sort of hit or miss, but the hits are really good. :)

  3. Ohhh Vamp It Up is such a cool color! These look like they leave a really nice stain behind. I have one of these in Just Peachy (which I think is pretty for spring), and I'm pretty impressed by how nicely it applies.

    1. It really is! It's a lot more dramatic than what I'd usually wear on a daily basis, but I think it's fun to have a couple of colors like that in your collection. :)

  4. I have Sugar Plum Fairy and Cherry Bomb and love them! They're nice and dark and very pigmented, and not at all expensive. They're good for the times when I want to get a little vampy :)

  5. I bought two of these over the weekend and am not a fan. I think because my lips are small these are REALLY hard for me to use. I only opened one, I think it was called Cinnamon Spice, so I think I am going to return the other one I got and get something else.

    1. Oh no, bummer! Is it because of the shape of the lipstick? Round lipsticks are not the easiest to use out of the bullet, I must say.
