Weekly Poll: Holiday Gifts for Men

Hey hey it's Wednesday! Guess what that means? It's time for another weekly poll!

This week's question is for those of you who are buying holiday gifts for men this year:

What sort of holiday gifts do you typically give the men in your life? Or if you are a man, what sorts of gifts do you like to receive?

I ask this because I'm sort of stumped for ideas and my boyfriend is a pain in the ass to shop for. And he probably wouldn't appreciate getting one of the million makeup holiday sets that I think are pretty, believe it or not. He likes surprises, but when I ask him what general categories of things he might be interested in he always gives me a sassy answer. For example, earlier today I asked him what his favorite gifts were last Christmas and he answered "Chocolate, chocolate and CHOCOLATE!" and then he laughed like a giddy little schoolgirl. NOT HELPFUL, DUDE.

This topic was actually inspired by a post about manly soaps over at A Beauty Product A Day, and I wrote about Dollar Shave Club yesterday, so those are a couple of ideas. But soaps and razors just don't seem that exciting on their own... and don't even think of suggesting socks, because my mom sends him enough to outfit ten people every year.

So what say you, holiday shoppers? Do you have some gifts in mind for the men in your life? Or if you just want to complain about people who are hard to shop for in the comments that's fine too. :P

  1. Hahaha, it sounds like you should get him some chocolate! XD
I like shopping for people depending on their hobbies: does your boyfriend play any games, like any authors, have any movies or shows that he really likes? Also, any musicians/bands that you could get him music from? Some people don't like the idea of getting someone a gift card, but personally I love them! If there are any stores he is a fan of, that could be a really good idea :D

    1. I probably will get him chocolate, haha! He does read and watch films a lot, but he's sort of hard to shop for in that sense because he often checks stuff out of the library without me knowing about it. He has an Amazon wishlist, but both my dad and I have bought stuff for him off it and he was like "Oops, I already read that!" DVD box sets are a possibility. Gift cards might be a bit impersonal since we've lived together for 3+ years.

  3. Guys are so tricky to buy for; completely agree. We normally end up getting sport related items or yes 'smellies' the classic shower gels/soaps etc. Very boring really. Looking forward to seeing what other say?!

    1. Shower gel and soaps are certainly OK... my guy isn't into sports though, believe it or not! Stuff related to their favorite team(s) would be a great idea for those who are though.

  4. My boyfriend and I went on an impromptu trip to a larger mall than the one that's near us and it was SO helpful for me to see what things he was gravitating towards, so I would suggest trying that if you're stumped. My boyfriend loves little gadgets and things so he found several things in Brookstone that were interesting to him. For my dad though, I have NO idea eek! Oh, my boyfriend (sorry, that's getting repetitive, haha) is always on http://uncrate.com/ and http://fancy.com/ so you may be able to find some interesting things on one of those websites that will suit the men in your life :)

  5. I always get a little anxious when boyfriend gift giving time comes around even though we've been together for almost 8 years! I keep a bookmark folder for potential gifts so that when I see things he might like or he mentions something he wants/thinks is cool throughout the year, I can bookmark it. It makes it slightly less stressful when it's time to shop. I often end up giving DVD box sets, cool t-shirts, art supplies, instruments and books. I go for things I know he'll use because he doesn't like to have a lot of "stuff" which makes it a little harder. Things like tickets to events or special trips are also good for people who don't want just another thing to store!

    1. Thanks Michelle, those are all great suggestions. Fun t-shirts are a good idea... I've given him a few before and he actually wears them so I'm thinking he likes them! I should really start keeping a bookmark list like you do. Thankfully the holidays and his birthday are like 6 months apart, haha.

  6. My husband is the same. I get the chocolate response too and more specifically "Turtles", as that is one of his favorite kinds of candy. So I do make sure to get him those as a stocking stuffer. I find him so difficult to shop for, but I try to pay attention each time we're out to see what he goes toward. I also try to base my gifts on his likes.

He loves James Bond, so I get him the 007 cologne. He loves sports, so I get him a magazine subscription. He loves movies, so I get us a gift certificate for two for a movie date. And then, I just go from there. I love the gifts that allow for experiences like concerts, sporting events, a night away in a hotel, etc. Those always seem to be the most memorable! I'm sure whatever you get him, he'll love it and the thought behind it! :)

    1. Yes, I think it's the thought that counts more than anything! Events and experiences are a good idea... I'd have to think on what he'd enjoy going to, but I can see how that sort of thing would be the most memorable. :)

  7. My boyfriend is impossible, because, while he likes movies and sports and games he doesn't like "things". All his movies are files on his computer, and he wouldn't want something related to his favourite team and he has told me that he doesn't want me to get him video games!! Impossible. I usually get him things that he needs, that he doesn't like to shop for, like socks, underwear, soap, belts OR something like a weekend away or a night of watching a movie he likes whilst eating cupcakes I made. Anything else, he just won't use, so I've given up :) Haha. Good luck!

    1. Haha, glad to know it's not just me! The whole digital media thing makes it harder to buy gifts... I used to buy CDs and DVDs for people a lot more often, but that's tricky since people usually have a good media library on their computers now.

  8. Last year I gave my husband an awesome belt buckle from absintheonthenet.com that has a skull on it that looks like it's floating in absinthe. I have no idea what to give him this year. We've been talking about getting a bat house...

    1. I'm guessing that's something he didn't already have, haha! I'm looking at that site and they have some interesting glassware... I like the cups with the blown glass skulls in them. Not my boyfriend's taste, but I think they're cool. :P You totally should get a bat house... they're quite the helpful little creatures.

    2. We were looking at pics of bat houses and it's amazing how many of the little dudes can fit in one house!

  9. I always find it easy to buy for my bf, he tells me while shopping what he likes or is looking forward to getting, ie:Gaming release dates so I log everything he says, he has very expensive taste, all Digital & Technical stuff, I'm a Gaming Window come Xmas. Oh and books is another great choice, as is socks, underwear, alcohol and good old Novelty Mugs....my list goes on and on.... :) xx
