Indie Friday: Notoriously Morbid Douglas Firs Eyeshadow (it's magical!)

Bought It

Happy Friday! I hope it's starting to feel like spring wherever you are - I was NOT a fan of the sudden temperature drop earlier this week.

Notoriously Morbid Douglas Firs indie eyeshadow lost in the lodge jar

Enough whining. This week's Indie Friday is about a very special eyeshadow - Notoriously Morbid's Douglas Firs. A whole post dedicated to one eyeshadow?! That may seem like overkill, but it really is that special. Want to know why? Keep reading...

I've written about Notoriously Morbid a few times before, but the short summary is that they're an indie company that makes awesome loose eyeshadows, lip balms and other stuff. "Douglas Firs" is from "Lost In The Lodge", a collection they released recently inspired by Twin Peaks - you can check out the whole lineup here.

That's what the eyeshadow looks like in the jar. In case you're sort of colorblind, let me describe it for you:  It's a soft, matte, piney green. Very pretty, and sort of unusual in it's own way. But there's something else that makes this shadow even more special...

Left: Patted - Right: Blended with pressure

The swatches above are BOTH of Douglas Firs over cheapo ELF $1 primer. Say what?! That's right, Douglas Firs is a pressure sensitive eyeshadow. If you pat the shadow on gently it will come out as a soft piney green like it appears in the jar, but if you put pressure on your brush or continue blending then it turns to a deeper, more blue-ish green. I think that's REALLY cool.

Obviously you're going to need a decent brush to get the pressurized color effect, but if you're doing a single-color lid and want to add a little depth in the crease (or wherever you want the illusion of a crease) then this is awesome. That, and the colors are pretty anyway.

I've said this before in other reviews, but in case this is your first time reading I'll say it again: Notoriously Morbid's eyeshadow formula is awesome. They're soft, finely milled, blend out easily, and tend to be very pigmented. I really can't rave about them enough, and the fact that they're experimenting with novel concepts like pressure-sensitive eyeshadows makes me love them even more.

Where to buy: Douglas Firs costs $5.50 for a "completely packed 5g jar" or  $1.25 for a sample baggie. You can find Notoriously Morbid on Etsy, Storenvy, and their own website. Be sure to follow them on Facebook too for discounts and announcements.

What do you think of Douglas Firs? Have you ever used a pressure-sensitive eyeshadow?

  4. Yes I have! Just FYI, I don't think they state their TAT on the website but it's usually a couple of weeks. I did a review with some swatches a while back: http://www.helloprettybird.com/2013/12/indie-friday-portland-black-lipstick.html

  11. Every time I see this I think it says "Michael Douglas" and think wow that's the most random thing I've ever seen. The pressure-sensitive feature is so freaking cool. I see that this brand offers beauty blogger kits and I'm so all over it. Thank you for reviewing this!

  15. Ok this is one of the coolest eyeshadows I've seen in a long time. First of all inspired by Twin Peaks, immediately intrigued. The pressure color effect is the cherry on top for this unique shadow. Loved learning about this product! XOXO, Elif

  16. I would like to see a Michael Douglas-themed eyeshadow collection. I bet most of them would be grey though. Uh yeah, anyway, definitely go for the blogger pack! I've never done it because I've picked up roughly half their catalog in various sales and whatnot.

  17. Very true - though when is eyeshadow *ever* practical?

  18. Awesome! I can't wait to see which colors you get.

  19. Yeah, I'm totally whipping this shadow out if I ever participate in one of those "do your whole face with only five things" type challenges.

  20. Haha yes! I picked up samples of the whole Twin Peaks collection just because I thought the theme was interesting... I had no idea how special this shadow would be!

  21. WHAT. This is insanely cool and a genius idea. I love the idea of just darkening the crease. I'm off to obsessively read about this brand...

  22. I have never heard of an eyeshadow being two completely different shades depending on how you apply it. So cool!

  23. Yeah, me neither. It's a totally new concept to me so I wonder if there are others out there...

  24. Yesss you should! They also have many other lovely shadows that lack color-changing abilities.

  25. I don't even want green eyeshadow and I want this to see the magic!! I have to go see if they have any other shades in this formula!
