How Influenster selects folks for their voxboxes is still a mystery to me. I got an email a few weeks ago saying I'd be getting the Dessange Haircare/#JAdoreDessange box to try—yay! I don't remember filling out a qualification survey, but still, yay! Apparently there were a couple different versions of the box sent out—mine contained all three products from the Dessange Oleo Miracle line.

Dessange Paris Oleo Miracle Haircare Collection ingredients Influenster #JAdoreDessange VoxBox

Dessange Paris is a brand that originated in France (shocker). They launched in the United States a few months ago, and you can currently get their products at Target stores or online at Target.com. Dessange has several product ranges addressing various issues. Their Oleo Miracle line is designed to revive over-processed and damaged hair. I haven't dyed my hair recently, but I still have some damage from the last time, so I was excited to give this line a try. There are three products in the range: Oleo Miracle Replenishing Shampoo, Oleo Miracle Replenishing Conditioner, and Oleo Miracle Replenishing Oil.

Dessange Paris Oleo Miracle Replenishing Shampoo ($9.99 for 8.5fl oz/250ml):

Dessange Paris Oleo Miracle Replenishing Shampoo

Ingredients:
AQUA / WATER, SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE, COCO-BETAINE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, PPG-5-CETETH-20, PEG-55 PROPYLENE GLYCOL OLEATE, CI 14700 / RED 4, COCAMIDE MIPA, LINALOOL, CARAMEL, GERANIOL, ARGANIA SPINOSA OIL / ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL, AMODIMETHICONE, CAMELLIA OLEIFERA SEED OIL, SODIUM BENZOATE, SALICYLIC ACID, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, COUMARIN, LIMONENE, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, LAURETH5 CARBOXLYIC ACID, CITRIC ACID, PENTACLETHRA MACROLOBA OIL / PENTACLETHRA MACROLOBA SEED OIL, POLYQUATERNIUM-10, HEXYL CINNAMAL, BENZYL SALICYLATE, BENZYL ALCOHOL, PARFUM / FRAGRANCE (F.I.L C53740/4).

The shampoo is semi-runny in consistency and sort of a light amber color. It does lather, but doesn't feel overly stripping or drying.

The scent is... interesting. All of the products smell similar, so I'll describe it after I introduce all three of the products.

Dessange Paris Oleo Miracle Replenishing Conditioner ($9.99 for 6.7fl oz/200ml):

Dessange Paris Oleo Miracle Replenishing Conditioner

Ingredients:
AQUA / WATER, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, PARAFFINUM LIQUIDUM, BEHENTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE, BHT, CI 14700 / RED 4, CI 19140 / YELLOW 5, LINALOOL, GERANIOL, CARAMEL, ARGANIA SPINOSA OIL / ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL, GLYCERIN, CAMELLIA OLEIFERA SEED OIL. COUMARIN, CHLORHEXIDINE DIGLUCONATE, LIMONENE, ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, CITRIC ACID, PENTACLETHRA MACROLOBA OIL / PENTACLETHRA MACROLOBA SEED OIL, HEXYL CINNAMAL, BENZYL SALICYLATE, BENZYL ALCOHOL, PARFUM / FRAGRANCE (F.I.L C54789/2).

The conditioner is creamy and moderately thick. If you have naturally oily hair it might be a bit too rich for you, but for normal to dry hair types it would probably make a good everyday conditioner. Extremely dry hair types would certainly want to follow up with intensive conditioners and/or treatments now and then though.

Dessange Paris Oleo Miracle Replenishing Oil ($11.99 for 3.4fl oz/100ml):

Dessange Paris Oleo Miracle Replenishing Oil

Ingredients:
CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, DIMETHICONOL, LINALOOL, ARGANIA SPINOSA OIL / ARGANIA SPINOSA KERNEL OIL, GERANIOL, CAMELLIA OLEIFERA SEED OIL, EUGENOL, COUMARIN, CINNAMYL ALCOHOL, LIMONENE, PENTACLETHRA MACROLOBA OIL / PENTACLETHRA MACROLOBA SEED OIL, HEXYL CINNAMAL, BENZYL SALICYLATE, BENZYL ALCOHOL, PARFUM / FRAGRANCE (F.I.L C54104/2).

A thick and slippery-feeling intensive oil leave-in treatment. The instructions say to apply 2-3 dime-sized drops to your hair, but I found that one dime-sized dollop was enough for my fine hair. It does have much of a color once squirted out of the bottle.

I have sort of mixed feelings about this product. Argan oil is pretty high up in the ingredients list, but only after some silicones, which are obviously going to coat the hair and make hair look more shiny whether or not there are prestige oils in the mix. There isn't anything inherently wrong with that, but personally I have problems if I use silicone-y oil treatments like this too often. In the short-term they gives me nice shine, but if I use them every single day the texture of my fine hair starts to feel waxy and sort of strange. This is a problem I've had with other products of this type too (not just Dessange). For that reason I probably wouldn't purchase this to use in my daily routine.

Overall impressions:
I think the Dessange Paris Oleo Miracle range is a decent choice if you have hair that's slightly dry or damaged. I'm a lot more fond of the shampoo and conditioner than I am of the leave-in treatment, but I think my hair type is better suited to wash-off hair masks or lighter conditioning sprays, so your results may vary depending on your hair type.

There is one thing I still haven't talked about that might be a dealbreaker for some of you: The scent. How to describe it... it's rather perfumey, powdery, sweet, and earthy. When I first started using these products I couldn't put my finger on what they smelled like, but then in the midst of the third use, it hit me: Tobacco leaf. They smell kind of like tobacco leaf, or more appropriately, an elderly female relative who's a heavy smoker. Hahaha. At first I thought my sniffer might be off, but that same day Stan happened to hug me and sniff my hair when he came home from work, and he said "Did you smoke a cigarette?!" (For the record, I don't smoke. Priceless!)

Anyway. I kind of like the scent in a strange way... it feels sort of old-fashioned and exotic (just like the innards of grandma's purse!) But I don't think it's for everyone.

If you're feeling a bit grandmotherly, you can check out the whole range for yourself at Target.com.

What do you think of the Dessange Oleo Miracle range? Does the scent sound appealing to you?

  1. Eek...I don't think I would like a hair product that smells like tobacco...I HATE the smell of cigarettes. Also, I have had issues with products that leave my hair feeling waxy too.

  2. Some people must love the smell of tobacco, because I see candles with notes of tobacco leaf sometimes. I think the leaf has a milder smell than freshly-smoked cigarettes though... Stan might have overreacted a bit to the scent, lol. But it's certainly not for everyone.

  3. Oh, dear. This sounds great, but I could not deal with smelling like an old smoker! Total deal breaker for me! I don't know why some fragrances have tobacco in the notes. I *might* understand the Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, but that still doesn't mean I want to wear it.

  4. Yeah those sort of scents are not for everyone. Some people find them really intoxicating though... shrug.

  5. I saw a reference to this line in a months-old People magazine so of course I had to check out the ingredients. Disappointing as usual. Has all the baddies... SLS, silicones, PEGs, quarts, etc. Thanks for providing them - they weren't on Target's app. BTW, you don't mention it here, but this is tied to L'Oreal. Not sure if they own it or if they just imported it.

  6. Oh, it bugs me so hard that Target doesn't list a lot of product ingredients on their app or website! Glad it was helpful. I'm not sure about the L'Oreal thing - the Dessange website says "Launch of the "Jacques DESSANGE Compétence Professionnelle" hair care range, manufactured by L'Oréal (under license)" under their product history in 1992, but I have no clue if L'Oreal is just manufacturing them or if they own the company or what.
