Indie Christmas: Notoriously Morbid's "A Dark Christmas Dream"

Bought It

Attention: We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming to bring you Indie Friday: The Christmas Edition! A bit late for the big day, but 'tis basically still the season, right?

For this extra-Christmassy edition of Indie Friday I thought I'd spotlight Notoriously Morbid's new "A Dark Christmas Dream" collection, which I got some sample baggies of during their Black Friday sale.

Just as a quick FYI, Notoriously Morbid is an indie makeup company based out of West Virginia. To be honest I don't know too much about them other a few *rave* reviews I've read.

The "A Dark Christmas Dream" eyeshadow collection intrigued me because it seems to be themed around A Christmas Carol, which of course appeals to the nerd in me. That and the colors are oooooh so pretty.

Swatch time! I took a whole bunch of swatch photos because most of these shades look really different depending on how the light is hitting them (right click - open in new tab to enlarge):

Notoriously Morbid A Dark Christmas Dream swatches

Please note: All of the swatches pictured were taken in indirect natural light and done over Darling Girl's glitter glue, which makes most glittery and shimmery eyeshadows look more vibrant. If you use these over plain primer or bare skin they will likely look different. I may update this post later with swatches over different bases, but I wanted to at least introduce this collection while it was still sort of Christmastime. :)

A list of the shades from elbow to wrist (descriptions taken from the Notoriously Morbid Etsy page):

  • Spirit Of All Three: One color inspired by all three spirits to visit Ebenezer. Gold with green and red sparkles (the green is more prominent).

  • Ebenezer, I Release You: Inspired by Belle's love for Ebenezer. Perfect victorian pink shade with a violet duochrome.

  • Stake Of Holly: "If I could work my will," said Scrooge indignantly, "Every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips, should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. He should!" A holly green with aqua sparkles.

  • No Warmth Could Warm: No warmth could warm Ebenezer. Ice cold blue with a slight violet shift.

  • Melancholy One: Inspired by the Ghost of Christmas Past, this shade is the first true color changing shadow carried by Notoriously Morbid. Appears like a soft golden beige in the jar, this color, when applied or blended, changes to a light blue with an orange duochrome.

  • Look Upon Me: Inspired by the Ghost of Christmas Present, this shade is the one of three of the true color changing shadows carried by Notoriously Morbid. Appears like a dusty mauve in the jar, this color, when applied or blended, changes to a metallic purple with a blue duochrome.

  • Shadow Of Things: Inspired by the Ghost of Christmas Future, this shade is the one of three of the true color changing shadows carried by Notoriously Morbid. Appears as a charcoal gray with aqua green sparkles in jar and on bare skin, this color, when applied over primer changes to a dark metallic teal green.

I think most of the color descriptions are accurate, except "Melancholy One" does not look beige at all to me in the baggie... I wonder if it looks that way in a jar? I also don't really see the orange duochrome, but it is a light blue-ish color.

In case you still didn't get a good enough idea from the swatches above, I've also uploaded a quick video to YouTube:

Please ignore how filthy my windowsill is. Thanks. Anyway, I think this is a gorgeous collection of shimmery and sparkly colors so I can't wait to experiment with them more. So far I've used Look Upon Me, Shadow Of Things and Ebenezer on my actual eyelids and they held up pretty well.

One more note: I have tagged this post as "vegan-friendly" because many of Notoriously Morbid's shades are vegan, however not all of them are so please check out each shade individually if you're worried about that. They're very good about labeling the ingredients in their products.

  2. Oooh a sample baggie for $1.25? You tempt me so...especially since I don't use eyeshadows that often. I have to look into this glitter glue! The colors look super vibrant! But you're right I don't see any beige at all in that baggy...lol thanks for sharing :D I love seeing your indie reviews.

  5. Agreed! I got a few more shades from their other collections too... I haven't done any swatches or photos yet but they look really gorgeous as well!

  6. I live to tempt, haha! Seriously though, indie companies are the best for unusual colors because most of them sell sample bags or minis for really cheap.

  7. Yes, I think they would be right up your alley! If you're a lip balm addict also check out their "Coffin Kissers"... amusing name *and* it's a decent lip balm!

  8. They are pretty pigmented by themselves, but the Glitter Glue definitely helps in that department!

  9. Ooh, I think I need to get that glitter glue!

I'd love to see some of these in action (ie, on your face :) ).

  10. Possibly in the future... I just got these a few days ago so I haven't even had a chance to wear all of them yet. That and taking selfies/FOTDs/EOTDs etc. makes me feel rather awkward. But I will say this - I wore "Shadow Of Things" again today and I think it may be becoming a new favorite!

  11. Those are some gorgeous colours. *w* I wonder how they look over other primers, though. I really need to try some more indie brands, but shipping here is always kind of a bitch.

AGREE WITH SHANIIIII, SHOW US A LOOK. Peer pressure. Lol.

  12. Different ones look... different. Haha. I haven't tried all of them over every possible different base, but I wore "Ebenezer" over NYX milk the other day and it looked a bit brighter (unsurprisingly). It was also still pretty pigmented and sparkly. Still testing out the rest!
