What I got in my ModCloth Stylish Surprise - March 2014

Affiliate Links Bought It

ModCloth posted on their Facebook page last week that they were doing another "Stylish Surprise" sale, and I knew immediately that I couldn't resist.

For those of you who missed this, here's the deal:

Are you ready to take a chance? The rewards could be huge! For just $10, you might get anything from a terrific top or sassy skirt, to a dazzling dress or cute coat. There’s a beautiful bevy of mystery items with retail values from $29.99 to $299.99 - now that's what we call a real deal!

They also did one for shoes. Since I am an insane person and a sucker for punishment, I decided to pick up five stylish surprises. That's right, FIVE. Three pieces of apparel and two pairs of shoes. Was it a failure or freaking awesome? Let's find out!

Just FYI, all of the clothing pictured is size "large" and the shoes are a size 9. I wasn't too sure about the sizing because I would be a large on bottom by their size chart, but an XL on top (thanks for the watermelon boobs, genetics!) I've been losing a little weight lately though so it made more sense in my mind to go for the smaller size.

1. Esley Fine and Sandy blazer - originally around $59.99 (I think)

It's a little wrinkled from being in the box, but I freaking love this. The color, the style, etc. It doesn't seem to be in stock on the ModCloth website anymore, but I found a similar blazer in a different color here. Unfortunately it's a bit too small because MASSIVE CHEST, but I'm going to hang onto it for now in case my boobs shrink a bit as I lose weight.

2. THML Clothing dress - original price unknown

For some reason the houndstooth pattern on this dress looks brown in the photo, but it's actually black and white. Anyway, it's nice! This seems like the kind of thing I would have worn back when I had a normal people job in an office, but it's certainly not too formal for me to wear while I'm doing my not-so-normal people stuff now. It's a *little* tight in the chest, but the fabric is stretchy so I think it will be fine with the right bra.

3. Lunachix navy skirt - original price unknown

This is more navy than it appears in the photo above - direct light does weird things. Anyway, I like the tabs and pockets on the front, and it fits! Very cute, and the fabric isn't too thick so I think this will be great for summer - maybe with a navy and white stripey tee?

SHOE TIME.

1. Dollhouse "Joey" lace-up oxfords in emerald - worth around $31

Not sure what these cost originally, but I found them elsewhere online for $31 so I'm going to go with that. Faux leather. When I first opened up the box my reaction was something like "?????" I was not expecting to get shoes of this style, for some reason. But once I looked at them for a minute I decided that I actually liked them. I never would have chosen these for myself, but I have a feeling I'll end up wearing them a lot.

2. Bait Footwear Tati boots in "British tan" - original value $82.00 (source)

Hrmm. I'm not sure if I like these. They're certainly not awful, but they're not really my style. I asked my boyfriend if he could remember the last time I wore ANYTHING brown and he couldn't, lol. So I'm not sure if I'll keep these or try to sell/swap them. These are also faux leather, by the way.

Overall feelings:

I'm pretty satisfied with my Stylish Surprise. For $50 I got three things I will wear right away, a jacket that I might be able to wear in the future, and a pair of boots that I don't necessarily love but aren't totally horrible. I sort of hoped that I would get some cute flats or heels, but them's the breaks when you shop in a stylish and surprising manner. But anyway, three or four desirable items out of five seems like a  pretty good success rate. The items in this bundle were valued at at least $173, and that's not even factoring in the two items I couldn't find prices for. Overall, I'm pleased!

Unfortunately all of the Stylish Surprises are sold out now, but ModCloth has a bunch of interesting shit in their sale section. and when the Stylish Surprise goes live again (usually 3-4x per year) you'll likely be able to find the items here. If you're a new ModCloth customer you can get 20% off your first order of $50+ by using my referral link.

What do you think of my Stylish Surprise? If you bought one too I'd love to see what you got!

  4. That's the thing... you just never know if it's going to suck or not! What kind of stuff did you get last time?

  5. i got this tunic thing (a dress, but not quite long enough imo) that's too tight on my chest, and i also ordered an accessories one that ended up being a pencil pouch. i think i may try to trade the tunic on MSA swaps though.

  6. yeah, though i'm pretty sure it was marketed as a "grab bag" then. seems like this time everyone has gotten cute/wearable stuff!

  7. I absolutely love the houndstooth dress. That's something I would've picked out myself and paid a lot more to buy, And the lace-up oxfords ARE really cute! You should try color-blocking them with the navy skirt, I think. I've never heard of this Stylish Surprise thing before (I found your blog a few days ago, so sorry if you've mentioned it in earlier posts), but I might try this out if they run the promotion again in the future. So fun!

  9. Hi Becky! I didn't mention it on here, but I tweeted about it and stuff. From what I can tell the Stylish Surprises sold out REALLY fast though. I'd recommend following ModCloth by email or Facebook or something so you can get a crack at it next time! I think they do it a couple times per year. And yeah, totally agreed on the dress. It's totally something I would have been tempted to buy had I seen it in a store. I have no idea how much it cost originally but the construction doesn't feel "cheap" at all.

  10. That's the thing, you never know! Some people were more conservative than me (lol) and only got one or two pieces, so that might be "safer" to only risk $10-$20. A lot of the ModCloth stuff *is* my style so I wasn't too worried about it. Anyway, I will definitely be sharing if I see them doing it again!

  14. Ohhh, awesome. I browse Modcloth a lot but I'm too stingy to pay for shipping here. :P I like the lucky dip type things, but I have weird proportions, so I have to really look at an item online to know if it'll fit me. Haha.

  17. I browse ModCloth sometimes but am too stingy to pay for any of it despite the free local shipping on $50+, haha. I'm a little bigger on top so I have that issue sometimes too... the Stylish Surprise was a risky game. O_O

  19. Heh, well I'll keep that in mind! It's not *so* far off from fitting though... just a bit too tight in the chest.
