Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer, you sneaky trickster. I'm sure a lot of you out there reading have already seen this since it was one of the picks for the March Ipsy bag. I've seen mixed reviews of this product, but I think it might actually be my favorite thing from the bag. Why? Because REASONS. OK, I'll elaborate a bit.

Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer review

First of all, here's the product description from the Pixi website:

Even, flawless skin tone is the sign of youthful healthy skin. Sometimes we need a little help with the glow from within. This primer is the perfect solution; the formula is loaded with skin loving ingredients. Formula contains powerful anti-aging and skin fortifying benefits. Formula suitable for all skin types.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua / Eau), Glycerin, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Steareth-21, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Isododecane, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Cetyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Behenyl Alcohol, Xanthan Gum, Panthenol, Disodium EDTA, Steareth-2, HDI/Trimethylol Hexyllactone Crosspolymer, Silica, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A), Polyacrylamide, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Laureth-7, Sodium Hyaluronate, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol. Let's get something straight right away: This is not what I would typically consider to be an all-over face primer. Why? It's pigmented and shiny. When I think of all-over face primers I think of clear or nearly-clear siliconey goop. This product has a thinner, less slippery texture.

Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer review swatches
Left: Dabbed on my hand - Right: Blended in

As you can see from the photo above, Pixi Flawless Beauty doesn't really "blur" the lines in my hand but it does add a subtle peachy shimmer. Be conservative with how much you dispense and it will blend it naturally and evenly. Thankfully this does not go on as orange as it looks straight out of the tube, so if you opened this and were scared to use it because of the color, don't be. Here's what it looks like on my face in a couple of different lighting conditions:

Left: Artificial light - Right: Indoors but in the path of really freaking bright sunlight

If you were to see me wandering around the street in the day the color of my face would probably look somewhere between those two pictures. Lighting makes a difference, yo. Anyway, in the photo I'm wearing the same base makeup - a light coat of the Pixi primer underneath my normal foundation (Missha Perfect Cover #13). As you can see, it gives me a bit of dewy glowiness, which I LOVE. This is exactly how I want the finish of my foundation to look. Bear in mind that I have combination-leaning-dry skin - if you're extremely oily, you may hate this. It makes you shiny. A lot of people with oily skin seem to want to look less shiny. Do you want to look less shiny? If so, don't use this.

I find that this holds up pretty well over the course of the day and doesn't melt off my face. Of course I have dry-ish skin and it's not hot outside, so I'll have to report back on how it does in summer weather conditions. But for now, I love the subtle glow it adds to my skin, and despite the frightening color in the tube, I don't think it makes me look too orange at all.

Bottom line: Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer may not be the best all-over face primer out there, but it works really nicely as an illuminator/luminizer/shiny-fier and I think it suited my pale skin very well. I'm not sure how this would look on dark skin - if you have any comments on that, I'd love to hear them.

Where to buy: You can find the full size ($22 for 1.3oz) on the Pixi website or Target.com. There's also a mini tube ($9 for 0.4oz) available at Pixi and Target. And if you suddenly feel like signing up for Ipsy, you can do so here.

Have you tried this product? If so, what did YOU think?

  1. I got this in my bag too and have been using it. I have combination/oily skin so I don't apply this on my nose where I get the most oily. I don't see a huge difference but I have been wearing it with bareminerals loose powder which is the main foundation I use. I will have to try this with the Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation and see how it looks. I do like it though.

  2. I think as I'm getting older I've been leaning more towards the "dewy" finishes because anything matte has been making all the lines on my face stand out more these days.
Anyway, it looks great on you, and it's good that it doesn't make your skin look orange, because the colour of that primer is a little misleading!

  3. Yeah, same here. I am fortunate to not be a wrinkle-monster, but I do have some (aging will do that) and if I put anything dry on around my eyes I look a thousand years old, haha. And yes, I'm also relieved that it didn't turn me orange!

  4. I think you could use it all over your face if you wanted to, but if you have a shiny nose (like me) then I'd skip that part. But yes, I love products that make you look a little dewy too! :)

  5. I like this on you. I agree, you don't look orange-y at all. When it comes to foundation, primers, and powders I'm all about subtlety.

  6. I have never tried any of the Pixi products!! Sorry, I am wrong, I did try a Pixi bronzer that Ipsy sent me one month and it was okay.

  7. Me too. I don't mind looking a bit shiny/glowy, but I don't want something that makes me look disco ball glittery... well maybe on my eyes, but not on my face.

  8. I got that bronzer too! I don't have much to compare it to because I don't really use bronzer, but I was surprised at how not-ridiculous it looked with my very pale skintone. So I guess what I've concluded is that Pixi is good at making pale people-friendly products. :)
