Weekly Poll: Cactaceae, Dreams, and How to Succeed in Business

Happy end-of-the-month, everybody! Has April 2014 been everything you could have hoped for and more?

Today's poll post will probably be sort of weird because it was inspired by a bout of inner conflict. Do you ever have moments when you wake up and basically realize that you have no idea why the hell you're doing what you're doing? It happens to me sometimes. (And no, that's not the poll question.)

I think this is probably a natural symptom of getting older. When you're really young it seems like every single insane idea you have about the shape your life could take is actually a possibility. Time goes by and you forget about some of those things, but then occasionally you'll wake up from a dream in a cold sweat and be like "OH MY GOD, I NEVER FINISHED THAT COMIC STRIP ABOUT THE ANTHROPOMORPHIC CACTUS!!!" Or whatever. That's been my experience, at least.

Anyway, all this contemplation led me to think of this week's poll question...

If you had to start your own small business (or side business) right now, what would it be? It doesn't have to be realistic. Bonus points if you can come up with a name for it.

Putting aside the obvious choice of Freelance Astronaut Agency, I think it would be really interesting to develop and design games. Of course I have really mediocre artistic skills and basically no programming skills, so I don't think that's actually going to happen. Since this is a fantasy anyway, I guess I might as well make my business a hybrid games design/Elvis impersonator training school/bespoke nut milk bag business, because why not? I'm still not sure what I'd name such a venture, but it would probably have to do with cacti. If I dreamt about a cactus then why shouldn't it be representative of my Dreams?

PS The supple succulent pictured above is Cleistocactus Winteri, in case anyone was wondering. I took the photo at Kew Gardens in London, in case anyone wants to feast their eyes upon the same cactus I once spent an afternoon pondering.

  3. I am trying to learn more about Motives Cosmetics to maybe sell on the side but the woman that originally contacted me just can't get with it lol. I'm tempted to just contact someone else. Other than that...I would love to start my OWN business that is beauty/and or fashion related I just haven't thought to much about it in general.

  5. I would love to a Beauty Tester. I mean literally, I would be able to get to try out any high end or drugstore product for free and also could test out beauty procedures like Botox, Dental Veneers etc. I would call it: Be My Guest and Let Beth and Beauty put your Product/Service to the Test!

  9. Holy crap. As a teen in the late '90s, I made up my own anthropomorphic cactus character (who cruised around on a skateboard claiming to be God).

  10. I also developed my cactus as a teen in the late 90s. Mine was a regular guy who worked a white-collar job and had to deal with the annoying office politics of his coworkers. I spent a lot of time after school sitting in my mother's office waiting for her to be done with work, so I guess all the ill-fitting button-down shirts and flickering fluorescent lights inspired me. Also, he didn't have any arms so nobody understood how he got his work done, but he did when nobody was looking.

  11. Mine was a Saguaro cactus so he had little arms! I never got very far with plotlines, though. I'm pretty sure I was inspired by the Western Beef supermarket logo.

  12. That is an amazing logo. I grew up in Massachusetts, so I never got to see that fashionable cactus as a youngster. What could have been, what could have been...

  13. I would want to invest time and energy into making my lookalike puppet, Admin Lizzy, a multimedia lifestyle expert. Like, a puppet version of Oprah who also sings songs about how not to break up with people and how to incorporate more veg into one's diet. I think her business would just be called "LIZZY" since she would be one of those single-name megastars. Hmm...maybe I should have her do a Memebox video review now that I think about it...ahahahahahah

  14. I read your comment aloud to my boyfriend and he said "I WANNA SEE A PICTURE OF THIS PUPPET." Memebox videos would probably also suffice.
