Weekly Poll: What's Cookin', Good Lookin'?

It's Wednesday and I'm eating cold, leftover soup for lunch. That seems appropriate somehow. Which brings me to my question of the week...

Do you know how to cook? If so, what's the dish you're most confident in making? If not, what do you wish you could make easily?

I know how to make a lot of different stuff, but one thing that never seems to fail is lentil soup - I've yet to meet a single person who didn't like it. Not that exciting, but a crowd-pleaser for sure. This was on my mind because I was showing my boyfriend how I make it yesterday - his somehow came out a totally different color than mine usually does, but it still tasted good, so high fives for him.

If I had to choose something I didn't already know how to make, I'd say an angel food cake without eggs. For a long time I didn't think that was possible, but then I read this blog post about making meringue with flax - mind blown.

  1. I certainly wouldn't say I was an expert but I can get by with my cooking. As for what i'm most confident about - it'd be between a mango chicken curry or sloppy joes - both homemade and from scratch!

  2. My most requested dish (but also the most unhealthy) around my apartment is my Creamy Garlic Chicken pasta. It's awesome but definitely a splurge meal. I've been trying a lot of (thankfully) successful new recipes this week to get out of a 5-recipe rotation rut I was in!

  3. My fall-back dish is definitely tacos. There are endless options for fillings - chickpeas, black beans, pinto beans, potatoes, roasted vegetables, lentils, Soy Curls, seitan... And with a sprinkling of cumin, paprika, chili powder, and coriander, you're good to go. And of course, guacamole makes anything better!

  4. I like the way you think. Tacos are definitely a frequently made dish in my house, though they end up being of the black bean variety like 90% of the time. And YES to guacamole! If only avocados were a little less expensive...

  5. I think anything with "creamy" and "pasta" in the name is bound to be decadent! Have you tried doing any cookbook or cooking challenges? I do that occasionally when I'm in a recipe rut. It doesn't even need to be an official challenge... pick a cookbook and vow to make at least 10 recipes out of it next month. Or something.

  6. Knowing how to make a few good things from scratch is more than many people can do! I'm also a fan of sloppy joes, but we make ours vegetarian with lentils. I guess we eat a lot of lentils. :P

  7. I love my healthy version of my chicken/rice/broccoli casserole!!! I wish I was better and knew how to cook more asian dishes!

  8. I make crockpot meals like beef stew really good but they are fool proof and I cheat and use a mccormick packet! I think I make Shrimp Scampi pretty good but not as good as my mom.

  9. Trying more and more asian dishes until I get it right!....LOL!

  10. Hey, whatever makes it easier! Cooking at home with a seasoning packet is still better than getting takeout all the time. My mom is an excellent baker but not the best cook... shh, don't tell her I said that. :P

  11. Macaroni + Cheese! I love experimenting with different cheeses and add-ins like veggies to make it healthier + more well rounded!

  12. I make really awesome salads, which I know people scoff at because they think - it's a salad - but I'm talking fresh spinach, avocado, cranberries, mushrooms, candied pecans...

But I fail when it comes to bread. Somehow it never rises properly. It must be some sort of magnetism.

  14. Excellent idea! We always throw tons of veggies into pasta because otherwise it's just... pasta.

  15. Not everyone can make a decent salad. There are salads and then there are SALADS. Your salads sound like SALADS. The combo you just described sounds delicious.

  16. I love to cook! I have in fact been to culinary school and plan on taking a baking program next. My dream is to own a bakery some day. I would say that either my chilli or my bacon sausage mac & cheese is what I am most confident cooking. This was a great question!

  17. I live and breathe cooking - I work in a cookware store and if I'm not playing with makeup or writing on the beauty blog I'm in the kitchen! I rarely use recipes and most things begin from scratch (bread/crackers/chutney etc) and I have been known to get into heated debates about the best way to cook a poached egg. Bit of a culinary nerd over here haha x

  20. Ooh, lucky! I always enjoy browsing around cookware shops but I lack the space to own them all in my tiny apartment kitchen. I'm not much of a recipe person either... I just sort of throw things together and see what comes out!

  22. I didn't make a cookie monster cake.... That must be someone else. I did blog about a Ratatouille cake once though?

  23. That is probably what I'm thinking of. I don't know what the hell made me think of Cookie Monster. My memory is not what it used to be....
