Weekly Poll: Thanks, Future Self

Happy Wednesday, everybody! How are you? I'm preparing to go on a trip out of town. And by "preparing" I mean putting one thing in my suitcase, getting distracted, and wandering away repeatedly.

This week's question is for all the blogger bloggers and/or beauty enthusiasts out there:

If you could go back in time and give your younger self one piece of beauty advice, what would you say? And at what age would you visit your former self?

I think I'd go back to about age 13 or 14, when I started getting bad acne. I'd tell baby Rebeca to invest in some light moisturizer, because despite having oilier skin then, I was also getting random dry flaky bits all the time due to cleansing the crap out of my face in an attempt to curb the acne. Tricky, eh? If I got to give a bonus tip I'd say lay off the seafoam green eyeliner (yes really), because that shit just looked strange.

How about you? Got any potentially life (or skin) changing advice to share with your past self?

  1. I would go back to middle school me and tell myself that buying 100 pots of lip balm is NOT enough to attract a boy's attention...especially when it's so subtle they can't tell I'm wearing any. Oh, and that Stridex is not a substitute for a daily facial cleanser.

  2. I would go back to 16/18 and tell myself how to conceal spots and that a fringe would work wonders on my face. (Today I look younger than 6 year before lol)
Additional tip for myself NEVER wear long skirts - makes me look like a ton!

  3. I'd probably go back to when I was just starting high school and tell myself that no, not all blondes can get away with not plucking their eyebrows. (I'd also go back and tell the girl who sat in front of me in history class that watching her pluck her chin hairs has scarred me for life, I think, and smack the compact mirror out of her hand.) Seriously, though, I think of Eisenhower or the Civil War and chin hairs come to mind--no kidding.

  4. I'd go back to middle school and tell myself what haircuts to get. That one regret...

  5. Stay away from the metallic blue and silver wet and wild eyeliner!

  6. I think I would tell myself to be more mindful about using sunscreen. I used retin-a as a teenager, and often just used the Clinique yellow moisturizer which doesn't have sunscreen. I probably should have used a better moisturizer altogether considering my skin got pretty peel-y (gross) from the uber strong retin-a I used at the time.

Mine would be to not brush out my perm...or to just not get a perm!

  8. Ah, me too with the SPF. I'd whine if my mother told me to apply more sunscreen, but at the end of the day I'd come home with a nasty sunburn if I didn't! Might have been worth listening in those cases. :P

  9. Haha, I identify with both of those points so much. I used to carry around a thousand scented lip balms with me all the time ... like anyone would even notice that I was wearing it? And the Stridex thing ... I think it was Oxy pads in my case, but same (bad) idea. :)

  10. Dressing for your body type is a good tip! I didn't really figure that out until my 20s. Actually, maybe I still haven't figured it out .... :P

  11. Hahahaha that's so funny. It kind of reminds me of my high school Spanish class - I sat behind this girl who wore thong underpants, and I know this because she'd wear them with super low-cut jeans so when she sat they'd ride down and I'd end up trying not to stare at the bare half of her ass for the rest of the class period. Now whenever someone talks about learning Spanish I think about that girl (how did her butt not get cold while being exposed to the world every day??)

  12. Uh oh, I'm scared to ask. Though I decided on a "boyish" haircut when I was about that age and it was pretty regrettable ...

  13. Ooh, metallics! My seafoam green eyeliner was also metallic, lol.

  14. That sound like a serious ouch! I totally used the yellow Clinique moisturizer too, by the way. And I never gave any thought to wearing sunscreen outside of like ... going to the beach. Not good.

  15. I've never had a perm .... what happens when you brush it out? It just loses its shape or what?

  16. yeahhh the blue and silver were awful looking back at pictures lol

  17. Oh no, nothing like that! I had cut it shoulder length and it went from being straight to wavy in odd places, and that was before I owned an iron so it was very awkward. Many bad hair days! I'm grateful for the waves now though. They've made their way across my hair in a more consistent manner. x)

  18. Ah... everyone commenting so far has talked about going back to an age that makes me feel very young, haha. As for me, I'd want to go back to when I was 9, when I started to dislike putting anything on my face/body, and didn't wear sunscreen like my mom told me to. And I used to swim too! All that sun damage I did to my skin for nearly 6 years...

  19. I would go back and tell myself to not get in any tanning beds! I didn't do it often or for very long, but I still regret it. Also, like you I would tell myself to use moisturizer, those acne treatments were harsh!

  20. Hey, it's our fault for being old! :P But I was the same exact way when I was a kid. Refusing to put on sunscreen all the time. I got some nasty sunburns too, why wouldn't I just listen? Oh, kid logic.

  21. Ooh, tanning beds. That's something I've still never tried. When I was 18 or so I worked with a pair of sisters at a supermarket, and one of them had a completely different skin tone to the other simply from frequent tanning bed usage. I wonder if she regrets it now? :P

  22. So far it's OK - I will be writing an update post after I get back from my trip!

  23. Also relevant to current self, but: DRINK MORE WATER!

  24. I think that is good advice for most selves!
