What I got in my ModCloth Stylish Surprise - Fall 2014

Affiliate Links Bought It

When I saw that ModCloth was having another Stylish Surprise sale I knew that I had to partake—the stuff I got in the last one was pretty cute, and definitely a good value for the money. Little did I know what terrors awaited me this time around ....

ModCloth Stylish Surprise - Fall 2014 October September what I got unboxing reveal

Not familiar with the ModCloth Stylish Surprise? ModCloth (online retailer of cute dresses and other awesome things) will clear out their stock a couple times per year (usually around the end of a season) and sell mystery garments for $10 apiece. A great deal (assuming you like what you get), as their clothing tends to be quite a bit more expensive than that. Last time dresses were mixed in with other apparel, but this time there was a separate dress category, so I snapped up five of them. I was super-excited about getting only dresses this time, until I saw what actually showed up in my mailbox. Yeah, it was pretty bad. Is curiosity killing you yet?! Fine, I'll show you what I got.

Quick note: Sorry my photos are so crappy. I really need to get a dress form or something. The photos taken on dress forms are from the ModCloth website, by the way. And I ordered all five dresses in size "large".

BB Dakota "When The Big Day Comes" Dress (Original price: $149.99)

Call me crazy, but ... this is a wedding dress, right?! Between the whiteness and the lace and the name, it HAS to be. Getting a wedding dress as part of my Stylish Surprise made me laugh a bit ... I don't have any plans to get married right now (despite the nagging and gentle questioning from my mom). But the dress is sort of pretty—I thought maybe I could shorten it and use it in the summer? That is, until I dug deeper into the box ....

Not sure what you're looking at? That would be THREE of the "When The Big Day Comes" dress. Yes, that's right, ModCloth sent me three IDENTICAL wedding dresses. I'm so confused ... do they expect me to marry three times? Or to have some epic triple-wedding like you see in soap operas? Now I'm worried. I wrote to ModCloth customer service about this—still waiting to hear back! Edit: I heard back from them on 5 October and they offered me a refund or store credit for the duplicate dresses.

Dream Waltz Dress (Original price: $124.99)

This looks like it was meant to be a prom dress, or .... dare I say it ... a bridesmaid's dress. Three brides, one bridesmaid?! This triple wedding is getting out of control!!! In all seriousness though: I don't think this dress is horrible, but I have no idea when I'd actually wear it. Got some fancy suggestions for me?

Angie "Joyful Joiner" Dress (originally $69.99)

ModCloth Stylish Surprise - Fall 2014 October September

At last, something a normal human being would actually wear in their everyday life. This has a fine, pink houndstooth pattern if you can't tell. Cute! Not crazy about the cutout in the back, but I can work with it. This obviously isn't winter-friendly, but I'm sure I'll find an occasion to wear it next spring or summer! Totally worth $10. (By the way, if you've spotted this dress on the ModCloth site and know what the style name is, let me know!) Thanks Chelsea!

Overall impressions:
What a clusterfuck. I'm certain that getting three of the same dress was a mistake, but it didn't help that they (and the red dress) were so incredibly inappropriate for my lifestyle. The third dress is cute and totally my style though, so I guess that's nice. I still might consider picking up another Stylish Surprise in the future because I have had good experiences with them before, but this .... WTF?! I suppose I'll wait and see how ModCloth responds to my customer service inquiry before I decide. Edit: I am satisfied with how they handled the problem, so I would consider ordering again.

Like ModCloth but don't want to end up with a disaster like this on your hands? I recommend giving their sale section a browse. A lot of cute stuff ends up on clearance there—for example, I got these really pretty shoes that way a couple of months ago. (Hmm, maybe they'd go well with my three new wedding dresses.) Stylish Surprise sales tend to happen about 3-4x per year, so be sure to check out this page and sign up for e-mail alerts the next time one goes live. If you're new to ModCloth, you can also use my referral link to sign up and you'll get 20% off your first order of $50+.

What do you think of my ModCloth Stylish Surprise this time? If you bought one, were you satisfied? Feel free to leave links to your own Stylish Surprise unboxings in the comments!

  2. I suppose you're right! Too many dresses, not enough balls.

I missed out this time because I found out too late (and then my app notified me about it 5 days later when everything was already beyond sold out). That red dress you got is adorable and I love the name of it. Maybe you can start a bridal business with the three white ones? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hah! That would be an awfully small bridal business, but we've all got to start somewhere I guess. :P And yeah, they were totally bad about letting people know about the sale! The only reason I found out in time is because I saw someone post about it on a forum.

  5. Yay, thanks! I updated the post. Yeah, I was expecting to get more stuff like the 3rd/5th dress ... I didn't really realize they had more formal special occasion dresses, probably because I never went looking for them.

  6. I can't believe they sent you three of the same dress! Even though it says non-returnable, I bet if you contacted their CS they'd do something. They have to. That is ridiculous! I do love that last pink/cream dress, though.

I ordered two of the dress surprises and liked one of them, but of course it didn't fit :( I guess next time I know to order a size up.

  7. Oh mannn that SUCKS. That white lace dress is DEF a wedding dress and I said bridesmaid dress when I saw the red one before I even read the caption. I would DEF right a complaint about getting 3 of the same dresses. It seems like they are sending out items that didnt sell well in the store or online and want to get rid of the inventory?

  8. I contacted their CS by email - still haven't heard back. Their support page says that they have a longer-than-normal response time right now though. I think a lot of people got screwed-up orders, lol.

Bummer that yours didn't fit! There are swap groups on Facebook though, or you may be able to sell them on eBay if they're not hideous. :P

  9. Hahaha right?! I e-mailed them already, but they haven't responded yet. I think the general purpose of Stylish Surprise is to clear out extra inventory, but the stuff I've received in the past has always been wearable. No prom or wedding dresses. :P

  10. This is why I don't buy Modcloth Surprise's anymore. I tried it twice and both times it was a bust! Once I got a dress similar to your bridesmaid gown and the other time a hideous grandpa cardigan. And normally I would like a grandpa cardigan. :) I figured maybe the cute stuff sells out in my size.

  11. I wondered that about sizing too - I feel like I've seen cuter options from people who ordered a small, but that perception could just be fueled by my own annoyance at getting a million wedding dresses, haha. I like the idea of a "grandpa cardigan" but if it was hideous even by grandpa cardigan standards, I dunno ....

  12. Wow. And formal dress size 10 is probably nowhere near a "large" considering how many sizes I have had to go up for things like chorus uniforms...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yeah I was thinking that too. Most people would probably consider a US 10 to be "medium".

  14. The Baklava dress is very pretty, but I saw someone post on a forum that they got FIVE of them!! What in the hell is going on with ModCloth?!

    ReplyDelete
  15. HA oh my goodness. Guess it really was a surprise!

    ReplyDelete
  16. LMAO this is so sad but hilarious. (Welcome to life on the internet??) It's too bad your "haul" turned out so bizarre, I realized I remember seeing the pictures from your last stylish surprise and I liked all of those a lot!

That last dress is so cute, I can see it with bold tights and a turtleneck and a loud necklace!

  17. Wow....the 3 wedding dresses. I have no words. I really would love to know what they end up saying when they get back to you on that. I know that they're "surprise" boxes but that's a huge waste of someone's money. What is anyone going to do with 3 identical dresses, especially wedding dresses?! Sheesh!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh my gosh...this post had me laughing out loud because seriously, what on earth were they thinking?!? I'm hoping that they get back to you and apologize and say that it was a mistake!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I posted it up for swap on My Subscription Addiction's swap site, so hopefully someone will like it. If not, I have some younger cousins that I could gift it to.

Good luck with their CS! I would be so surprised if they didn't do something for you, though.

  20. Yeah I imagine the shipping to your part of the world is killer! I'm looking at the ModCloth page on Facebook and it seems like a lot of other people got duplicate dresses ... how this happened on such a large scale is beyond me.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Haha yep. The text is gone from the Stylish Surprise page now, but I'm pretty sure it said something about people receiving unique items. Even if I'm remembering wrong, sending three wedding dresses is kind of shitty. :P I mean worst-case I might be able to sell the extras on eBay, but I got five with the hopes that I would find up to five dresses I could actually wear!

    ReplyDelete
  22. They still haven't gotten back to me... grr. I'll admit that I might have laughed pretty hard when I saw all the white in the box, but I would like a refund at least ...

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've been thinking of ways to winter-ify the last dress ... a turtleneck and tights might work. The white dresses will just have to wait until "When The Big Day Comes", lol.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That is ridiculous! I would have been so mad! I hope they respond to you soon!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Haha yeah ... still waiting to hear back at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I'm sure getting 3 of the same dress was super annoying but having them be wedding dresses at least makes for a good story. I would have been creeped out! Sending even 1 wedding dress seems weird to me, actually.

    ReplyDelete
  27. So great I came across this---the exact same thing happened to me! I ordered 5 dresses, and got THREE of the exact wedding dress as you. When I called they actually mentioned it had happened to someone else. (maybe it was you).
Good news is they refunded me and gave me store credit, so I am pleased. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  28. lol. I still can't believe you got 3.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Haha agreed on all counts. I think a bunch of customers got wedding dresses this time (not necessarily three though) and that's just ... weird. I did get a good laugh out of it and ModCloth refunded me for the extra two dresses in the end though, so no harm?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hahaha! I really wonder how many of these wedding dresses they had on hand ... insanity!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah I wondered about the sizing too. I ordered "large" and all of the wedding dresses are size 10 - I feel like most people would consider that a medium? I looked at the ModCloth size chart though and it lists 2-4 and "small" and 10-12 as "large" so guess not. Hopefully you can find someone to swap them with you? Or someone(s) because nobody needs four wedding dresses?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh dear! This idea sounds great, but ModCloth needs to work on the execution. That being said, I would try this out. I love ModCloth, but it has always been too expensive for me to buy anything.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It seems like a lot of people got screwed up orders this time, so hopefully ModCloth will learn from the mistake and execute the sale more carefully next time. I'd be willing to try it again since they did refund me for the error. If you ever see Stylish Surprise being advertised you have to buy FAST though, because they tend to sell out of a lot of the sizes within a couple hours.

  34. I've totally bailed on the Stylish Surprise after this fiasco: http://www.healthbeautyboxes.com/2013/03/the-modcloth-stylish-surprise.html

  35. That doesn't seem *TOO* bad. Maybe a bit underwhelming though.
