Lately I've been on a bit of a budget lipstick-buying craze. I blame the change of seasons—nicer weather calls for brighter colors, I guess. So naturally when Memebox released a collection of spring lipsticks in collaboration with famous makeup artist/YouTuber Pony, I knew I had to have it!
The Memebox X Pony Blossom Lipstick Collection is actually part of a larger collection that also included three eyeshadow quads, but I was only feeling the lipsticks for whatever reason. (Which is good, keeping in mind my poor, poor wallet.)
There are four shades in this collection: Two semi-matte, two glossy. All four lipsticks sell for $12 apiece and contain 4.5g of product.
A brief overview of the shades:
- Pony Blossom Lipstick #01 Rose Garden: Semi-matte finish. Brick Red if it lived in a lighter, happier universe. Slightly orangey.
- Pony Blossom Lipstick #02 Spring Romance: Semi-matte finish. Kind of a dark cherry/pink color, for lack of a better explanation.
- Pony Blossom Lipstick #03 Orange Dahila: Glossy finish. A vibrant pink coral.
- Pony Blossom Lipstick #04 Blooming Love: Glossy finish. An adorable bubblegum pink.

Hey, guess what? I put them on my mouth too! Here's what that looked like:
Let me start with my thoughts on the semi-matte lipstick (shades #01 and #02). I'll be honest: I had some issues with them. Both are surprisingly sheer for matte lipstick... they're definitely buildable, but when I applied more than one layer, both of them had a tendency to creep into the lines on my lips throughout the day while the lipstick on the rest of my mouth wore off. Not terribly flattering. If you have smoother lips than I do or use some sort of primer you can probably get past that issue, but for me it made the whole experience a bit more fussy. My solution? Wear them with lip balm underneath. That eliminated the gross fading issue, but it also made them less matte (and less long-lasting) at the same time. Again, fussy! There is one silver lining though: The matte lippies aren't especially drying, even without balm underneath.
As for the glossy lipsticks (#03 and #04): I have no complaints. They aren't terribly long-lasting either, but I wouldn't expect any lipstick with this sort of texture to be. I love how smooth they are... almost balm-like. Neither of them really stain your lips, so you're definitely going to need to reapply throughout the day.
As a collection, I really think this is a perfect selection of colors for spring. I deem #02 and #03 to be the loveliest (and probably most universally flattering) of the bunch, and I've been reaching for #03 (Orange Dahlia) far more often than the rest of them. Oh, and in case you're wondering how they smell, all of them have sort of a vague fruity scent. Pretty inoffensive.
Overall I like the Memebox X Pony Blossom Lipstick collection, but I don't love it. The colors are trendy and pretty, but the formulation of the matte shades could use a little bit of work. I have no regrets about buying it though—it's been a fun addition to my lipstick wardrobe, even if the wear times are brief.

Bummer about the matte lipsticks. I like the look of those better than the sheer ones but pigmentation and not drying is important to me.
ReplyDeleteCute colors. I really like the glossy pink.
ReplyDeleteI've only tried a few lip products from the Memebox brand but I experienced similar results. They didn't have very strong pigmentation or lasting power. I think the #3 sheer one is really pretty, though!
ReplyDeleteOrange Dahlia's pretty. Sheer but pretty. Like you say, nothing really out of the ordinary though. TFS
ReplyDeleteI've tried Spring Romance and I had the same fading issue :(. I really wanna grab the Orange Dahlia one; I never thought I'd like an orange until I saw the Orange Dahlia swatches. Plus glossy lips are fun :)
ReplyDeleteI like matte lipstick better in general I think, but these just weren't richly pigmented enough for my taste. If I'm going matte I want it to be bold!
ReplyDeleteMe too. I think the coral shade suits my skintone slightly better, but the pink is super feminine and cute.
ReplyDeleteI've tried a bunch of different lippies from the various Meme-lines and my results have varied a lot. Some of them are AWESOME, others are kind of OK but not amazing (like this). They do seem to have a good eye for colors though.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think I have some similar shades to Orange Dahlia in my collection actually, but not quite as glossy. Whatever! It's pretty and I've worn in a bunch of times, so I guess that's all that matters. :)
ReplyDeleteYes :*( I find pinks incredibly hard to pull off with a yellow undertone. Which makes me really want to find my perfect one. I'm just like "Challenge accepted".
ReplyDeleteGlad it's not just me that noticed the fading issue. Anyway, I think Orange Dahlia is a good choice if you want something kind of orangey but not straight-up orange. There's enough pink in it that I think it would flatter a lot of skintones.
ReplyDeleteThat's how I feel about orange. I'm more cool/pink toned so some orange shades look kind of weird on me, but I still keep trying them. (Which reminds me, I should post swatches of the 100% ridiculously orange Memebox x Haena lipsticks...)
ReplyDeleteSheer matte? Yeah, I can see how that wouldn't work out. I agree about the colours being pretty though. I'd be reaching for #3 as well!
ReplyDeleteit is totally amazing how different the colors look on you vs me - I am warm toned, so I bet that makes a difference. I own #1, #2 and #4 and Rose Garden is a brick red and Spring Romance is a plum red on me. They aren't true mattes, but I don't mind that at all - I found them to have a bit of sheen to them and they are sheer, which again, doesn't bother me. I don't have the slippage issue either. I cannot determine whether something is long lasting, because nothing ever lasts long on my lips (I am always talking, eating, drinking - haha), so I couldn't say if they were or not. now #4, which is the glossy pink, was slipping all over the place and that I had to use a lip liner to keep in it place. I also didn't care for the gloss color that much either.
ReplyDelete#3 looks really pretty!
ReplyDeleteHaving a different skin tone could definitely make a difference. Are your lips naturally darker/pinker than mine? I think that could have a huge impact too. Anyway, I'm constantly talking/drinking/fidgeting with my mouth so i definitely know what you mean about things not being "long-lasting", haha. I feel like these faded on me extra-quick though... like some really good lipsticks will actually last 3-4 hours on me if I don't eat, but these ones seem to fade on me in an hour or so. I don't actually view that as a huge problem for everyday wear, but it's something I might want to keep in mind when choosing makeup for special occasions, days when people are going to be taking my picture etc.
ReplyDeletePrecisely. I was expecting #2 to be kind of an oxblood color, but it just turned sort of dark pink on me. Maybe it would look more dramatic on folks who have darker lips than I do. Shrug!
ReplyDeleteYour bare lips are an amazing colour already, so I'm just utterly blown away by that. I hear you on the 'okay but not wow' factor on these. That seems to be the general trend with the Pony x Memebox collaborations. Which makes me a little sad because Pony is so awesome, I think she deserves to have higher quality products associated with her personal brand.
ReplyDeleteyes, my lips are darker than yours :) I agree about special occasions, but since I never have any lip product on my mouth for an hour (haha) I guess I didn't notice it as much with these products.
ReplyDeleteThat outer packaging, though! So pretty! The Blooming Love color looks right up my alley. A glossy pink is one that I can never say no to. Really shocked at how different Spring Romance looks in the tube vs. the swatches!

I agree completely. I bought the first two Memebox X Pony palettes too, and while I think they're perfectly decent, they aren't as special and magical as I would have hoped. I'm glad Memebox at least made the packaging prettier with this latest collab - better than the same old boring black cases.
ReplyDeleteYeah it's weird, isn't it? It definitely comes out as more of a dark pink/berry hue on me.
ReplyDelete#2 through #4...drool. They look great on you. --Angela
ReplyDeleteThose are such refreshing colors! Love the variety of pinks to red! I wouldn't know which color to choose in the morning and probably end up wearing a stripe of each on my lips!
ReplyDeleteI love the colour of the Orange Dahila, thanks for the swatches!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the beautiful swatches! I love the sleek packaging of these lipsticks and would totally get them except I have a lot of similar colors to these already. >.< I hope they will keep collaborating with Pony though or she could start her own makeup line because I would love to see what she comes up with next~
ReplyDeleteThe packaging on these is awfully cute, and I really like the happy bubblegumminess of #4. Too bad the mattes are fussy.
ReplyDeleteThank you Angela!
ReplyDeleteTrue story: Because they fade kind of quickly, there have been some days when I wore more than one shade. I also kind of like #2 layered over #1. I may have done that while I was writing the post, actually. :)
ReplyDeleteMe too! Orange Dahlia definitely seems to be the most popular of the bunch. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, the packaging is very cute too! I would be interested to see what a Pony collaboration would look like outside of the Memebox universe, but I suppose that's just wishful thinking. :P
ReplyDeleteYes, the bubblegumminess is very very happy! I can live with the minor disappointment of the mattes because the glossy shades make me happy.
ReplyDeleteA sheer semi-matte does sound awfully frustrating. They all swatch beautifully though. I really like glossy shades for summer too. I'm all about the "lip butter" craze!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review! I was so excited to get #1 or #2 but seeing how sheer they look on the lips I think I have to change my mind, I have too many lipsticks that aren't matte already and adding this to the bunch is completely unnecessary. What a shame bc all these shades seem to look great on their own!
ReplyDeleteThose are all really pretty! I can't really handle a fussy lipstick. I love the packaging though! Both the boxes and the tubes are very cute. Really liking shade #1 on you too!
ReplyDeleteYeah, frustrating is a good word. You can build up the color, but that sort of makes the lip line problem worse... meh. But yay for the glossy shades! I love lip butters and lip butter-esque things.
ReplyDeleteI think they did a really good job of selecting colors for this collection, which is why I got excited and bought all four of them, haha. I wish the matte ones were a little more impressive, but what can you do?
ReplyDeleteThank you! Yeah, when I'm shopping for lipsticks I'm never like "gee, which one will annoy me the most throughout the day?" I've tried worse than this though... it's sheer but at least the texture isn't grainy or gross.
ReplyDelete#3 and #4 looks gorgeous and I defo would wear them. I've yet to try their line to be honest, I'm just not fully convinced. hehe x
ReplyDeleteI've tried a bunch of different Memestuff and it's sort of hit or miss, honestly. I have a few lippies from them that i love and others that are meh. Hard to predict which ones will end up being awesome. :P
ReplyDeleteI've yet to order from them again - I still have the brushes I scored for $10 last time and for how much it costs, it's not so bad :). Maybe next time I'll get one of their mystery bags. :D
