Indie Friday: 5 fandom-themed collections worth checking out

Bought It

In case you hadn't already figured it out, I love indie cosmetics. The prices, the colors, the creativity, the formulations... there are a lot of seriously underrated gems out there. But there's also another, more superficial reason I love them: Geeky themes. It seems like there are more and more collections popping up all the time inspired by different fandoms, and I totally love that.

Today I thought I'd share a few of the fandom-themed collections I've been thinking about the most lately. Some of them I own, some of them I'm coveting, but all of them seem awesome.

1. Daily Lovelies "The Cumberbitch Duo":

I actually have yet to order anything from Daily Lovelies so I don't know if they're reliable as a company or not, but I'm a big fan of the BBC Sherlock series. So I was drawn to these, naturally. There are actually a few Sherlock-themed collections out there in the indie world, but I like the simplicity of this one. Sherlock and Watson 4Ever. Cumberbitches unite.

2. Notoriously Morbid - "Lost in the Lodge" collection:

What fandom does this collection represent? Hint: One of the shadow names is "My Log Saw Something That Night". Those of you who are already fans of this show will know - it's Twin Peaks! I got a couple of samples from this collection when I ordered something else last month, and immediately flipped my ship when I realized that they were Twin Peaks-related. The highlight of those samples was Douglas Firs, which is a matte pressure-sensitive/color-changing shadow. Say what?! I bought samples of the rest of the collection (as well as a bigger jar of Douglas Firs) and just received them yesterday, so eventually (hopefully) they'll get swatches. But since the collection only has six shades and Notoriously Morbid's samples only cost $1.25 each, you probably don't have much to lose by trying them out. :)

3. Victorian Disco Cosmetics - "Sirocco" collection:

This is the only Miyazaki-inspired indie collection I've seen, and I totally love that it exists. I've actually owned all of the shades for a while but haven't swatched them because (a) there are a daunting 13 shadows and (b) I had sort of a so-so customer service experience with the company so I'm not sure how I feel about recommending them. The shadows themselves are beautiful though, and really "feel" like they belong in the Miyazaki universe, so I must give the owner props for her skill and creativity.

4. Darling Girl Cosmetics "Ghost With The Most" collection:

First of all, Darling Girl makes really nice eyeshadows. And Glitter Glue, which is my fixative of choice for sparkly shadows. I've looked at their site a number of times and just recently noticed that they have a Beetlejuice-inspired collection - how did I miss this?! I must have watched that movie a hundred times as a kid. Theme aside, a lot of the colors look really cool... I have my eye on you, Stupid Parlor Tricks.

5. OHWTO "Make It So" perfume oil:

OK so this is just one item, but there is a serious lack of Star Trek: TNG-themed stuff in the indie world so I needed to mention it. I've haven't bought this yet because tea scents aren't my favorite thing amongst all things, but I love that it exists.

What do you think of these collections? Is there a fandom that would inspire you to buy cosmetics?

  2. Yes, they definitely exist! Victorian Disco has some. Probably some of the other indies too.

  3. Notoriously Morbid - "Lost in the Lodge" collection really intrigues me, sorry I had to copy and paste to leave this message but my brain is literally fried today. I seriously kept forgetting the name when I was trying to do this comment. I think it is nap time for this girl.

  5. Of course I would like the Ghost with the Most collection colors + theme most hahaha. I remember seeing a Legend of Zelda collection on some Indie cosmetics brand recently and I regret not buying all of it. >...> Can you do a bath & body Indie brands some week?

  6. I have been eyeing the Azeroth collection from Victorian Disco Cosmetics for ages (I've played Warcraft for years -- it's addictive). I've put Strange and Unusual and Stupid Parlor Tricks in my cart at DGC numerous times, but haven't bought them for some reason. Yet.

  7. I had never come across Victorian Disco before, but I have just had a little look and discovered Harry Potter and Doctor Who eyeshadows! All I need now is a Buffy range! xx

  8. I have never come across any of these brands before and don't get the references since I am not familiar with these movies/shows but some of these colors look awesome! If you didn't tell me about the Beetle Juice references I wouldn't have know but now reading the titles I get it lol. I'm slow lol. Love that movie though! I THINK they are coming out with another movie and Michael Keaton will be back to play Beetlejuice! Thanks for sharing!

  12. I could do a bath and body post, though right now it would probably be more of a wishlist type thing because I don't have a ton of that stuff in my possession. That still might be fun though. :)

  13. Strange and Unusual also caught my eye. I think next time I order from DG I will probably get at least those two.

  15. Yeah, I think that's the beauty of these collections... even if you don't care about the shows, they're still amazing eyeshadows! I didn't know that a new Beetlejuice movie was actually happening, but if so that's AMAZING. Would definitely go see.

  16. I do have Witch's Spell, and I would say it's definitely a black base with purple sparkles. If you wore it over a sticky fixative (like Glitter Glue) and were in the right light I could see how it would look slightly more purple though.

FYI, the owner of Victorian Disco posted something on their FB page recently indicating that only full-size jars will come with the stickers on top of the pots from now on, but if you'll be able to buy the stickers separately (useful if you prefer to buy mini or sample sized jars). Just figured I would mention that because personally I would want to make sure I got the Totoro stickers!
