The post you've all been waiting for: My review of the ONE DIRECTION Up All Night Makeup Collection

Press Sample

I'm sure you've all been wondering lately "Man, when is R. going to write about One Direction's makeup or fragrance line?" Well, your today's your lucky day. I got my hands on the One Direction "Up All Night" makeup tin (one of the three kits from the LE "The Looks" collection featuring 1D by Markwins), and I'll be sharing all my super-relevant old lady opinions about it below.

Background info:
The Looks Collection comprises three keepsake tins inspired by One Direction™s globe-conquering albums, Up All Night, Take Me Home and the latest chart topper, Midnight Memories. Each tin comes complete with everything you need to show off your personality. Are you a rock n roll girl, a fun party girl or the girl next door? We have just the right collection for you and illustrations to help show you just how to get your perfect look. All your beauty essentials are housed in a LIMITED EDITION collectable keepsake tin with removable sleeve, complete with ONE DIRECTION doodle stencils to decorate your keepsake tin and make it uniquely your own!

I'll be honest here and admit that I know pretty much nothing about One Direction. I do know that the one in the middle on the box picture is named Harry, because he has the neatest handwriting. The others appear to be named Jjm, Gww, Lewis, and Jiall. Nailed it, right? Speaking of the picture on the box, it's actually a protective plastic sleeve that slides off to reveal a patterned tin that looks like a brick wall. You can keep the sleeve with the tin or totes cut it up and hang it up in your locker. Now where do I find a locker ....

Here's a look inside the tin:

Everything is wedged neatly in place. There's also an illustration on the inside of the lid suggesting several eye looks you could create with the products.

All the loot de-tinned:

We have a little bit of everything in this set, so I'll go through it piece by piece.

Swatches L-R: Up All Night, Another World, Save You Tonight, Gotta Be You, More Than This

This eyeshadow palette contains four powder shadows and one creamy glitter shadow. The glitter one is called "Up All Night" and the other shades are clockwise from the top in the palette as follows:
  • Save You Tonight
  • Gotta Be You
  • Another World
  • More Than This

All of the swatches above were done over bare skin, and it's clear to me immediately that Save You Tonight is the most vivid of the bunch. Another World and Gotta Be You are also pretty decently pigmented. More Than This is probably meant to be a highlight shade, but since it's such a pale pink it disappears against my ultra-white arm. "Up All Night" (the glitter) is a little hard to work with, but if you want a dab of glitter here or there it will surely come in handy.

Next we have an eye crayon, lipstick and lip gloss. The eye crayon (named "Stand Up") is a vivid denim blue and applies very smoothly. I think this is the best product to use with the included stencil kit (more on that in a minute). The lipstick ("I Should Have Kissed You") is a pale bubblegum pink. The formula on this is quite dry, so I would recommend some serious lip exfoliation and balm-applying before using it. Last but not least is the gloss ("Taken"), which is a vivid pink with an extreme number of sparkles in it. The sparklies in this gloss make it slightly gritty, but it's definitely still wearable. Also, according to the box this gloss is UV reactive?! That means it should glow under a blacklight. Oh how I wish I had a way to test it, because that's pretty fun!

The kit came with one nail lacquer ("Na Na Na"). The formula isn't very opaque, but two or three coats will give you a very pretty, shimmery blue-green.

This is a fairly ordinary black mascara, but even it has a fun name: Little Black Dress.

And finally we have the stencils! You can use these with the included eye crayon (or other writing implement of your choice) to draw fun symbols on your tin or your friends. As I did with my 32-year-old boyfriend below:

He is soooooo ready for the 1D concert.

Overall impressions:
Some of the products in this kit are better than others. For me, the best bits are the UV gloss, eye crayon, and "Save You Tonight" from the eyeshadow palette. Let's be real here though: If you're thinking about buying this kit, it's probably because you or someone you know is a One Direction ultra-megafan, right? So just go out and buy it already. Most of the makeup in the set is very wearable, and you'll have fun ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the pictures of Gww and Jjm.

Where to buy:
The One Direction makeup collections are rolling out to various stores across the US this month! You should be able to find them at the following retailers:
  • Macy's
  • Stage Stores
  • Dillards
  • Beauty Brands
  • Lord & Taylor

I'm not sure of the exact prices, but I think these kits will be selling for around the $28 mark. And check out the official Makeup by One Direction Facebook page for more info.

What do you think of the One Direction "Up All Night" Makeup Collection? If you've tried one of the other collections, how did it compare?

  7. Omg I love this post! You and your boyfriend are hilarious. Also, I'm pretty sure you definitely got all of their names right (not that I would know either!). The UV lip gloss is pretty, also pretty interesting that it would glow under a blacklight.

  10. Ahaha. Oh man. No. Just no. I try to avoid learning about One Direction at all costs. The stencils look like the best bit there. :P

  11. The colors seem so ... mismatched? Well, they definitely know their target audience. xD

  12. The colors in the eyeshadow palette are a little crazy. Pink + taupe + three crazy shades of blue? Not sure what they had in mind with that. Youngsters who don't have a lot of makeup already probably wouldn't notice though.
