New from CoverGirl: Super Sizer Mascara by Lashblast & Intensify Me! Eyeliner (a review)

Fun Fact: New York City turns into a stanky, swampy mess of humidity once summer rolls around. They don't tell you that in the guidebooks, but it's true. Because of that, I'm usually on the lookout for water-resistant eye makeup once the weather warms up. Nobody wants to look like a sad mime when they step out of the subway.

New from CoverGirl: Super Sizer Mascara by Lashblast & Intensify Me! Eyeliner (a review)

I have two NEW eye products from CoverGirl to show you today: Super Sizer Mascara by Lashblast and Intensify Me! Eyeliner. Will they pass the anti-swamping test? Stay tuned!

CoverGirl The Super Sizer by LashBlast Mascara

CoverGirl The Super Sizer by LashBlast Mascara (MSRP $6.85):
Available in three shades: Very Black (800, Black (805), and Black Brown (810). I tested Very Black/800. The original LashBlast mascara is sort of a cult favorite amongst budget beauty enthusiasts, so I had high hopes for this mascara. It has a different wand shape to most of its predecessors—slender and spiky with a slight curve. It's also ever-so-slightly wider at the tip than it is at the base. Definitely not your same-old same-old fluffy brush. Also worth noting: Two sides of the wand are spiky but the other two are flat and smooth.

The instructions suggest starting with the wand at the very base of your lashes and twirling the brush as you go. I recommend doing this very slowly or else you'll get end up with a big glob-o-mascara that makes all your lashes stick together.

My results:

Conclusion: Not bad at all! I feel like it added both length and volume to my lashes, and I like the skinny brush because I feel like it's better for going back in and getting the hard-to-reach corners of my eyes. One word of caution though: This stuff can clump up and get spidery if you don't use a delicate hand because the formula is rather wet. I find that doing a gentle twirl (as suggested in the instructions) is more likely to result in success than just swooping it on straight with one side of the brush.

In terms of length of wear: I've worn The Super Sizer several times now, and it always held up well. I did notice a few flakes at the end of the day, but nothing egregious. FYI this isn't a waterproof mascara, but it doesn't seem to be overly affected by humidity, so I'll keep wearing it. In the makeup drawer it stays!

CoverGirl Intensify Me! Liquid Liner Intense Black 300

CoverGirl Intensify Me! Liquid Liner (MSRP $8.00):
Available in one shade: Intense Black (300). This is a stiff felt-tip pen style liquid liner with a very unique tip—it's kind like a paddle? Flat and broad on one side, skinny when you turn it. I don't think I've seen another liner quite like it.

I think the idea behind the paddle brush is that the narrow side makes it easier to make fine lines and the wide side makes it easier to make dramatic lines. Honestly... I disagree. I think a fine and flexible brush is always the best for creating any shape with liquid liner. There is a bit of a learning curve though, so I can see why some people might prefer the stiffness of a pen liner. Is it necessary to have two "widths" though? Here's what it looked like when I swatched it on my arm:

Still not really seeing the appeal of the broader side of the applicator. I just can't imagine a regular, everyday situation in which I'd want to create a line that fat on my eye. Anyway, I did test out the skinnier side of the pen on my eye a few times—here are my results:

I think it looks really good in terms of color intensity—it's pretty darn black and not too glossy. The formula also feels really light and comfortable on my eyes... more like I drew on myself with a marker than laying down a layer of paint (which is what some liquid liners feel like). I'll be honest with you though: I found the paddle brush shape to be a massive pain in the ass. Obviously I was able to work around it, but it would have been easier for me if the brush had been narrow all around. One other minor complaint: I wish the brush was a tad softer. It really feels like I'm drawing on my eye with a marker, which is... scratchy. The other thing you need to watch out for is that the formula is fairly wet straight out of the tube, so you have to be patient and let it dry a bit so you don't end up with a crazy, smeary mess all over your lids. I doubt this would be an issue for experienced liquid liner users, but it might take a bit of getting used to for newbies.

As for wearability, I think the Intensify Me! liner holds up great. It's fairly waterproof—not 100% smudge-proof, but if you aren't rubbing your eyes it shouldn't be a problem. And it doesn't flake at all, not one bit. I did experience a little bit of fading at the end of a particularly humid day, but nothing too dramatic. No "bald spots" on my eyelids.

  2. You had me at "nothing egregious." :D Did it not remind you of the Benefit Roller Lash at all? It seems like the same wand idea but it's been awhile since I used it.

  3. I think they definitely were going for something similar. I can't figure out where I put my tube of Rollerlash, but I'm looking at a picture I took when I first got it and it looks like the brush is a little more curved and spiky. I like the wand on Rollerlash better, but I like the formula of CoverGirl a little more I think.

  4. I have to get going on my review. I def prefer the thinner side of the eyeliner. I love how black it is though!

  5. I really like what I've seen from this mascara, but that's no surprise coming from Covergirl. I love how you did your winged liner. It looks great!

  6. Yeah I just don't really see the point of the fatter side. The thin side works well enough though!

  7. Thank you! Yeah, I think they usually do mascaras pretty well. I think this might be my first time trying one of their liquid liners though, so I was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the detailed and honest review. Looks like I will pass on these ones, even though I am a fan of CoverGirl mascaras. I prefer not to have to fiddle too much with them. No twirling for me, thanks!

  9. If you want a completely straightforward mascara experience, this definitely isn't the one for you. Nothing wrong with twirling, but it's definitely more fussy than your usual mascara brush.

  10. Your eyeliner is on POINT--I also have both of these too so it was great to read your review before I dive into the product! I'm kinda excited about the the paddle side of the eyeliner. As someone with monolids/hooded eyelids, a heavy eyeliner is sometimes necessary or else you just don't see any results soooo we'll see!

  11. Thanks! I've seen a few reviews of this but so far not on someone with monolids - not sure if it will smudge a lot in that case or not. I guess you'll find out! Hopefully not though.
