Review: SexyLook Intensive Whitening Black Cotton Mask

So today I'll be taking about something rather interesting... a black sheet mask that's supposed to have whitening properties. Somehow putting a moist black piece of cotton on the face feels like it would be counterproductive to skin lightening, but perhaps there's more to it than meets the eye.

Gahhhh!

The product of the day is SexyLook's Intensive Whitening Black Cotton Mask. SexyLook is a rather well-known Taiwanese brand of skincare products. There are three types in the black cotton mask range: Moisturizing, Repairing and Whitening. I was only able to get my hands on the Whitening masks, so I'm afraid I can't offer much insight on the other two!

I love the design of this package - in case you can't tell, the pink parts are metallic. There are five individually wrapped mask sheets inside the box.

These masks are supposedly infused with activated carbon to absorb excess sebum. The whitening variety also contains pearl extract, which is a common ingredient in moisturizing/whitening sheet masks. Here's what it looks like on a face:

Creepy much? I was tempted to wake up my boyfriend in the middle of the night wearing this, but I'm not that mean. I think the mask actually looks a bit like seaweed out of the package... here's a closeup:

Thankfully, it doesn't smell like seaweed. The fragrance on this mask is actually very mild... I suppose the best way to describe it would be as a light floral/honey scent, but it's really barely noticeable.

I was a bit nervous taking this mask out of the package because there was no paper backing and it felt VERY delicate... but as I spread it over my face I realized that it was sturdier than I originally thought. I would be careful if you have long fingernails as this is the type of cotton that can be shredded easily, but it's not as easy to tear when you pull on it. It does have a bit of stretch, which made it conform to my face very nicely.

The most interesting thing about this mask (aside from it being midnight black) is how incredibly soft it  was. Seriously, I think this is the softest sheet mask I've ever used. I ran my hands over it while it was damp and it felt smooth as butter, haha. If you find the fibers of your average mask to be too scratchy then this might be a great choice for you!

SexyLook's black cotton whitening mask is not the most moisturizing mask out there, but it certainly did hydrate my face a bit. There isn't a ton of excess serum in the packet, but there's enough for the mask to be fully saturated, and not so much that your face feels sticky afterwards.

In terms of whitening, I did notice an immediate brightening effect after I took off the mask, which I think lasted until the next day. I can't comment on whether this mask would do anything for hyperpigmentation, but it did give me a bit of a temporary "glow" so I liked that.

I bought this off eBay for $13, which works out to about $2.60 per mask. I think they're totally worth it at that price and I would probably repurchase for the unbelievable softness if nothing else.

Bottom line: SexyLook's Intensive Whitening Black Cotton Mask is mind-bogglingly soft and great for achieving a temporary brightening effect. The mask is moisturizing, but if you're looking for intense hydration then another variety might be more suitable.

Where to buy:
I bought mine off eBay, so you could try your luck there. Secretive.sg sells them individually and in 5-packs, though their international shipping rates are a bit steep.
