Weekly Poll: Puzzling Gifts

Well what do you know, it's Wednesday already. Time for the weekly poll!

If anyone out there was traumatized by the lack of a poll question last week, my apologies. The day sort of got away from me with all the birthday-ing. But I'm back to my boring routine now, so you can breathe easy. This week's topic was suggested by Karen from Unpack the Box:

What's the weirdest or most puzzling gift you've ever received?

This topic originally came up in a comment thread RE: one of my boyfriend's strange gift-giving choices (an ill-fitting poncho), but I thought of something weirder. My mom likes to send out "care packages" around birthdays and holidays - usually they consist of things like socks and chocolate. Pretty typical gift-y stuff. But once in a while she'll put together a package for no reason that makes me go "Huh?" The best example I can think of was the time she sent me a box with the following contents:

  • A region 1 DVD of "Three Amigos" (extra-funny because I was living in the UK and couldn't play it)
  • A pair of pastel blue flip flops (March in Scotland... probably not going to be wearing those much)
  • An enormous quantity of large, metallic star-shaped confetti (????)
  • A note that said "YOU ARE MY SHINING STAR" and nothing else (I was a grad student at the time... was this in reference to my unpublished academic achievements? I'll never know.)

Don't ask me to explain, because I have no idea. I guess it's the thought that counts...

But anyway, how about you? Got any strange or puzzling gift stories you want to share?

  1. I once received one of those abs belt things from an ex, I didn't really get I'd never asked for one perhaps it was a subtle hint that my gut need toning lol. I'd be a bit creeped out with the shining star comment sweet though haha x

  2. A Garbage Pail Kids Book (which I enjoyed looking through once) since I have the movie and a bottle of makeup remover.

  3. Umm I think I would be offended by that, haha!

  4. Were those things given at the same time? If so, unusual combo, haha. :)

  6. I got a pill box from an ex for my first birthday. Yes, a pill box. We'd only been dating for a couple of months at the time, so ok, maybe he didn't know me that well, but... a pill box. Mind you, I'm not a pill taker, and it was too tiny to put anything else inside. When I asked what possessed him to pick it out for me, he said he liked the design on the lid (I believe it was tiny flowers). Yeah.

  7. Um, my birthday, not my FIRST birthday. That would be waaaaay worse than puzzling or weird.

  8. I'm guessing it was a decorative pillbox, and not one of those AM/PM vitamin organizer things, right? Even so, that's sort of random... but now that you mention it my dad randomly bought me a pillbox with flowers on the lid a few years back, haha!

  9. I was going to say, if that's true you have an EXCELLENT memory! :P

  10. Yes, at least it was decorative. I think it's totally justifiable as a dad gift, but as a new-boyfriend-birthday-gift, it really weirded me out!

  11. The guy I was dating in highschool once gave me the most random assortment of items for my birthday. It included a tie-dye poster(???) A really ugly monkey shaped piggy bank and a pile of candy that I didn't even like!

  12. What young woman wouldn't want a tie-dye poster? :P

  13. I have tried to think of a weird or puzzling gift that I have received. I can honestly say I can not think of one. I can you tell you the worst birthday I have ever had was last years, when my husband forgot and didn't even get me a card nor gift. He was in the dog house for sure.....for quite a while.....LOL! Now he did make it up on my birthday this year in January, he took me away for a whole weekend!

  14. Yikes! At least he made up for it this year... forgetting your birthday is pretty "weird" though!

  15. Especially after 31 years of marriage at that time!!!

  16. You already know about the East German Helmet, so I'll add that the year my dearest husband brought me big mylar heart balloons for Valentines (and nothing else) was not a good year. What is a grown up supposed to do with balloons?

  17. My sister sent me balloons for my 21st birthday, as I recall. I suppose I'm still "kid sister" in her mind though so maybe that's less weird. But I didn't really know what to do with them either, haha.
